Crossed the Rio Grande river at Albuquerque and followed it for several miles. It is about 80 roads wide. Broad shallow channel of sand. The valley is quite productive of fruit and grain.

Many Indians and Mexicans. In the evening campfires are seen here and there where one or two are toasting their [chins?]. Being tired of gazing on the sandy [wastes?] I retire for the night.

Morning cold but clear. San Francisco mountains are seen early at 100 miles distance. Arrived at Winslow [Arayona?] at 7:45 A.M. Sand and plains. Pine forests to about Flagstaff. Stage depot to the Grand Canyon of the Colorado 60 miles distant. Pretty sight among the pine hills after leaving Flagstaff. Arrived at Flagstaff at 1 P.M. which is situated at the foot of

San Francisco mountain. Beautiful scenery down the grade from Williams Horseshoe bend in the mountains. Tried to have our cars set off for a day at Beach Springs to visit the Colorado Canyon. Left Peach Springs at 12 midnight.

Friday, Oct. 27, 1893 The way we went was not slow. We beat passenger time all [bollow?]. Arrived at Yucca at 5:30 A.M. White sand follows the train in clouds. Crossed the Colorado at 6:30 A.M. at [Miller?]. At this point it is about 40 roads wide.

Followed the river north [engaged?] some 12 miles to the Needles. At the Needles the river is about 1/2 miles wide. Indian Squaws at the train to sell wares - about 20. Indian village just outside of the Needles. Indians working as [section?] hands at this city. Flag of truce over the Indian camp.

Leave The Needles at 9 A.M. The old fashioned mail coach from the World's Fair is again on our train and with the conductor we ride on it and talk about the [Train?] Great sandy descent. Towns consist of double roofed [depotsouly?]. Toward noon it is hot

hot, hot.

Sand blows through the car like a snow storm. Shortly before we reach Barstow a wheel box catches fire and we stop half an hour to cool it. Arrive at Barstow at 8 P.M. Leave Barstow for San Bernardino at 10 P.M. after which I retire.

Saturday Oct. 28, 1894 Arrive at San Bernardino at 4:30 A.M. Stop off a day to await orders from Uncle Henry [Harkness?] goes on to Los Angeles. Take a walk through town at 7 P.M. Receive a telegram from Uncle H saying go to [Orange?] to unload. Leave San Bernardino at 10 P.M. Arrive in Los Angeles the next morning at 6 A.M.

Sunday Oct 29, 1894 Arrive at my destination in [Orange?] at 9 A.M. 40 "kids" and others come to [peep?] at the new [immigrants?]. Take off the horses and give them exercise through town. Go to [C.E.?] Meeting in evening at [Presbyterian church?]

Monday Oct, 30. 1894 The family arrive from Los Angeles about 1 P.M. [First leg journey back?]

First Journey to San Francisco.

August 31, 1894 Leave Los Angeles at 1:10 P.M. Leave Pt. [Angeles?] at 2:30 P.M. Sail on steamer, Santa Rosa. Have a fine afternoon voyage and arrive at Santa Barbara at 9 P.M. A pretty sight of the town. Take a walk uptown of a mile. Leave Santa Barbara at 10 P.M. Retire

Sept 1 Arrive at Port Harford at 6 A.M. [Rent?] a hotel there. [Narrow?] [grange?] railroad to San Luis Obispo - [Topeka?]. Take a walk up the railroad. Meet three ladies. Leave at 12:30. The sea is a little rougher. Sea Gulls follow the ship continually. Foggy all day. Coast is [mountainous?] all the way. [Do not?] see the sun set at sea. Have a concert and at 9 P.M. go to the bow of the boat to see the phosphorous fish - like electric lights in the water. Retire.

Sept. 2

A good night's rest. [Make?] the Golden Gate at [5?] A.M. Arrive at 6:30

For [extternal?] use: 5% Carbolic acid mixed with Raw [Linseed?] Oil.

For internal use: Spirits of camphor - 5 drops in water.
