Symmington? I would like to own [him?]. Won't you please send me a clothes bag. I forgot to bring one.

Whom do you you think I saw here in the library today. I am sure you could guess all week.

I saw the face & when it arose to seek the door I rushed after it. She is here as a special. French Major - failed also in English 1 a & b it was Sadie Richards.

I will send you one of the cards I have to make out for Registration & my hours.

Mrs. Slayton says she thinks they ought to have passed me in English.

I will have to pay $10 for my Chemistry. As

Physics is supposed to come in the second years course. My expenses are Room 33.00 Registration fee $10.00 & for Chemicals $15.00, books sofar $4.00. I joined the co-op & get all my books at a reduction of 10 or 15 cents. It costs $2.00 & every one says it is worthwhile.

I will have to have more money about $10 because I haven't paid the laboratory fee - Which I must before Thursday.

I went to a reception at Roble hall Thursday night. It was the new girls.

Quite nice. Alice is very nice to me. When I went to see her last Sunday she brought in the whole tablefull to meet me.

much to Miss Slaytons disgust. Last night Friday I went to a reception to all students at Eucina Gym.

Everyone was labeled with their names. The freshmen's tied with light blue the old students with red;- I met Charlie Field tell Mrs. Sangsbroth - & Mrs. Baker - who introduced her son Shirley. It was through her - wasn't it - that I got here. For as a rule Mrs. Morton don't take boarders Miss Purdy & myself are the only ones and we are very lucky. Mrs. Morton belongs to the Country club. She knows Mrs. Cambell -

Alice was very nice to me here also - & introduces me to several - Mr. Cochran included - he's very nice

they say here - he is a very nice young man - tell Grace so. I was also introduced to a Mr. Long & Stratton. Mrs. Baker is the matron of the boy's fratenaty, the [Zetas?] [illegible?] so nice for them to have her.

I won my light-[Hue?]- last night. I wish Elsie could come here. And room with me. This is an awfully long letter.

Please give my love to Mrs. Cambell & the girls.

I do hope more will come in. Isn't it lovely about my Physics - he wouldn't credit me & then for me to pass so well. I got my guilt. I have eleven credits & my English when I pass it will make 12.

To Mrs. Mortons, Stanford University Cal Sept 7. 1894 Sept. 7, 1894

My dear Mamma:

I expected to write to you today- but not before I had heard from my exams. I did not pass in English, I believe 80 out of a 2 hundred did. But don't feel bad about it = I'll send you a copy of it & the others. Prof. [Hewcomer?] said the fault lay solely in its being not a continuous composition it was a lot of detatched statements.

But!!! It was technically correct. The only mistake one of carelessness I wrote "as a rule-" with a capital R. So my dear mamma

Archias - Something I never reviewed. They use Daniels composition book. It has prose composition on Archias in it. And if any other girl is coming here I advise her to study that book. Miss Slayton said she thought anyone would do a great deal if they passed the ex. & never studied the Archias [illegible?]

Well yesterday I went to Prof Pease & he told me I had passed. Just to be sure but then, a miss is as good as a mile. I went to see Miss Slayton Monday and have been there every day. She is very nice out of school. I received the things Mr. Brown would not accredit me

It was correct -- the Spelling punctuation, paragraphing and arrangement of word!!!!

He said both he & Prof Lathrope pondered whether to pass me or not. But as I am not passed I take not Eng. 8. but Eng. 3.

I'll send you a register. My Laberatory Book was not sufficient for Prof Sanford as it contained no Laberitory notes but only examples.

He said if I could answer the questioned copied, I would easily pass an ex. I was unprepared for the exam but spent several hours & reviewed the Whole book. That morning I took the ex- I think it was very easy, He said they would

only correct the first - 5 examples he gave us 9!!! Of course, I answered the first five they were the easiest & then to season it I did the eighth & drew a string of mirrors with objects at every distance. Well I went to Prof Sanford and he said, he didn't remember who passed & didn't but he remembered mine & it was a very good paper!!

There was only one other girl who took the ex - the rest were boys. I was talking about it at table how easy it was when a Mr. Sewel said the boys told him it was awfully hard - Imagine

On Wednesday morning I took my latin exam. It wasnt on the elementry but on

blue wrapper to breakfast & to lunch if I want to. The gong has sounded so I will [ascend?].

I don't think that the manners are so bad. I'm getting in with a very nice set of girls the elite here that is - the ["Comebuie"?] as they are called. But still I'll go with whom I please & will not toady for any one's favor.

You might ask Miss Budy She lives in Sansoleld -- Did you or will you ask the Brown's & Helen Morris?

I"ll send the paper shade I made with the lamp.

I don't care about May [Hume?] The girls here almost All study at the same time.

We have the reception this Saturday. [Here?]

Nov. 21, 1894 Nov - 21 - 94

Dear Mamma: -

I have been feeling rather sleepy today but got through my lessons all right.

Yesterday afternoon I went to the last football practice or rather the last open one.

The band was there and played the Stanford yell besides many pieces and really played very well. I think there were about a thousand there to watch. This morning at the close if English we heard Rah, rah rah, rah! rah! rah, rah rah Stanford vigorously shouted out side - the boys all jumped & Prof [Newcome?] laughed and excused the class. And around the corner we saw a four horse bus

and dress.

Is it all all raining at home? there isn't a cloud here.

If Daisy invited Helen for Friday afternoon I won't write to her - Is Daisy Hamilton invited? And do you see Mrs. Magee? because I want her.

I think it real funny for Nellie & think that I should leave here flurried & excited. I've been to parties become but to be sure not a stylish grown-up out in the full sense of the word. But I'll tell you when I'll hardly be able to eat for excitement and that is on Thanksgiving day - before & after the game & should be doubly so if we going to the Theatre. I think we come back Sunday. I wish Daisy would be there but there Grandmamma expects me. GIve my love to all [illegible?], Grace, [Dade?] & Nellie

crowded with boys. The [illegible?] chorus had departed for the hills where they will practice in secret -.

so this Afternoon was the first one that I spent entirely in the laboratory.

I asked Miss Pitcher yesterday And she will come - so I'll bring - Miss Wheeler, Vinyard and Pitcher and self. I hope Jim won't plan for our early thanks giving dinner. Miss [illegible?] had a invitation to go to the California Theatre where all the students are going that night. I wish we were going too. But it would cost two dollars for us four that is You, Helen V. Louise P. & self. I'm sure they're (ie. students) going to have a jolly time. They are trying to learn song written for the occasion and Friday night After band practice the

Students are all invited to practice with the band. I think we will go.

I tell you how I would like my dress but I suppose it is impossible that is have a puffing of velvet Around the bottom of the skirt, cut like my blue- & velvet sleeves, velvet crush collar & belt & the rest plain - that is gathered a little at the the neck - & brought straight down but fitted. The train Arrives into Valencia St depot at 11.55 and departed a little over five minutes. I received Daisy's letter and am glad that Millie approved of my acting

Dear Mamma.

We arrived safely and sleepily. The train was Crowded with students. Aren't you glad that there were few or no Stanford Students In the drunken crowd after the game? I knew our boys weren't like that & Whitehouse in the other fuss hadn't drunken at all.

And please don't let people say we we won on a fluke it was not. It was good playing to break through And stop the ball And bad playing on [H-C's?] part to fumble instead of making the touch down. Have you spoken any thing about Next

and they all watched open mouthed at my skill excepting Helen, who knew I was experimenting.

So I took it in hand & we had rich tasting cocoa & wanted more so two of the girls went down stairs & stole a couple of quarts from the great-tin thing & we had some more. We were very hilarious. I got into bed at about twelve and was decidedly next day.

The girls here want me to join the Mandolin & guitar club - Miss Sherwood teaches but as I have no guitar I would have to rent one. I'd like to it would be fun. I wonder how girls find enough to write about to fill page after page. I can't so goodly Love to all & remember the Essays.

Lovingly

summer to Mrs. Magee?

Will you send me immediately Lambs Essay's & Elia - and I forgot those towells & Miss Pitcher's forgot her mirror. And She lost two dollars She don't know if at the school or out-side but please have the girls look.

Those things on the table of my room, I want.

We had an explosion today in the laboratory. A jar of Hydrogen which had too much Air in it exploded with a loud report. But the vessel was wrapt in a towell so there wasn't much glass flying around.

It's quite exciting how Hydrogen is so lively. I proformed the experiment but mine didn't go off. I have about two experiments to do in a day

we have an ex - on our experiments Monday.

Miss Wickham called on me today & I wrote something on the board, an exercise.

I got my Astronomy it cost $2.40. Monday night I went to a feast at Miss Gibbin's room. We had bread & jam & chicken & cocoa. I cut the chicken & finished making the cocoa.

Mrs. Temple was making it - & I [saw?] how lovely I could make it by pouring back & forth & thick. - I had never heard of making it thick that way untill Helen told me but I made believe I knew just exactly what I was doing.
