Arrive there about 6:30 and drive around. Got tickets to Star Wars. Then had dinner 7-7:45. Back + got in line. Still got good seats. Go show. Then out to supper at Hungry Tiger about 11. Then up to griffith park and see the view. Back to [Bullshot?] + Circus Max at 12:30. Stay for hour or so. Home around 2:30 again.

Sunday. Up + have breakfast at home. Get bathing suits on an go to beach ~ 12:00. Then home about 3:30. Clean up and dinner 4:30-5:30. Drive to PCC in Marina. Then back. Heard Star Wars theme. (Note: on way up to LA Satday we heard "I'm in Love," the big disco song. Sounded great on my radio.) Got home about 7:00. Lay down + watch sunset. Great! Chip's headache was gone. We just talked till 9:30 or so. Then did a little shopping at Albertsons.

magazines. Only one worth buying is Pers Comp. Saw new Heath computer kits. Also article about Pets. Also therein, Peddle said again that he is trying to get programs submitted from Pet customers. This is second time I've heard that. It was bad in terms of my plans. Talked about ASOC. Owner says he thinks a good home management system (general not finance) would be good. I say I don't think people are that interested in being so analytical.

Then went to buy groceries + went directly home. Made dinner and wrote Chip a long sorrowful letter about how badly I felt I treated him. I had also written him a letter Thursday morning while some of my stuff was being [cref'd?].

Also Friday I took a walk around Peninsula Center + went into Radio Shack. Heard about TRS-80.

My letter to Chip Sunday was spurred by lack of communication from Layne and no jobs in the Daily Breeze.

Had breakfast + reviewed my thoughts + thot some more. The information I think I'd need would be spelled out in the following courses:

Fall

Goodman (261 [Fourier?] Transform + Applic.) Gray (278 Intro to Stat Sig Proc) Kailath (363 Intto to Lin Sys Theory) These two are probably too far advanced.

Win 279 Info (Gray) Trans + med 378A Linear Est + Det Theory 376 Info Theory [crossed out]

Spr Commun channels (Hellman) [crossed out] Stat Det + Nonlin Est [crossed out]

[Note below referencing 367 and both Spr items] These were discarded as they were too general in attack or were digitally oriented. [/note]

I decided what I need to know would be included in 261, 278, + 279. I will go to Stanford this fall to use their libraries and also buy these books. Maybe research voice recognition.

So I then got the place cleaned up. Paid some bills + breakfast was done too.

Then Relatives showed up

Until I have more money, I don't want to strain the budget. Now I may be moving into a period of work, and out of my time of socially gregarioius fun. I can live ordinarily. Then when we get $$, we can get better things + maybe live in Orange Co.

I went to see O.C. last weekend. Hollywood would be too wild a place to live for a couple. Redondo Beach is too quiet. It is too S. Cal. Very crowded. Sometimes smoggy. I enjoy it but it leaves something in me unsatisfied. So I checked out Newport. Weekend before, I went and saw Newport Station. Looks like a nice group of guys. Not stunning but friendly. Looked around next day + saw EOCOM + Newport Center, which was written up in Busi Week, couple weeks ago. Anyway, this last weekend I drove all the way down to [Lags 7?]. I knew it was very undeveloped on the peninsula so I started at San Pedro. Long Beach except for downtown is very industried. Not nice. No really nice beaches.

If you go down the coast,

SUNDAY May 1, 1977

Since the last book ended several things have happened. I wrote the last entry in there about February 13. I had just got back from LA. Conceptually I had finished all of the development on EDITX's marketing and had finished all of the major work for MicroSoft except year end matters. I did those things through till Fri March 11 and also began the marketing of EDITX to APS. It was not all that intriguing but showed me that I need more patience in such matters. I also started to use APS to find new outlets for my sales. Sent letter to El Paso.

For MicroSoft, I also finished setting up the deal with Commodore and then I set off to California for vacation. I wanted to get a job there very badly. I also wanted to have a good time with an all-american blond. I met one name Jim Schultz. We

went to the beach and Disneyland and bars in Long Beach, Newport Beach, etc. Wonderful time. He was going to repay the $50 he borrowed but still has not. I went to see Cal. Software Products & Pete Washington on Friday & was unimpressed. Then interest starts.

First I came back to MicroSoft Fri Mar 18. No job in hand. But that is not bad I guess. The first week was very boring. Oriented Elaine, bought furniture, etc. No Editx stuff I was too depressed but I made my appointment Tuesday to see & give EDX demo the next Thursday, March 31. That first weekend I was back, Chip was gone and I just wanted to think about what I wanted to do. Spent Thurs & Fri night & Sat all day on it. Church & letters on Sunday. Some crazy idea of working with Xerox, as a sociological-impact researcher

I wrote letters of interest the next week, along with letters to satisfy any speeding tickets. I wrote to Xerox PARC and to Alan Kay there. But it didn't ever pan out. I also gave my demo at APS and that was favorable and I called El Paso after sending them a letter the previous Thursday. This was unfavorable. But I tried to work out something. May come down & demo at Easter time. The next weekend.

That weekend of the second week I goofed around w/ Chip around Madrid and in Santa Fe that night. Got up late both days. Sunday, did brunch at Albuquerque Inn. Then I did my own crazy stuff Sunday aft and we went to N M Film Show Sun night.

The next week was a fast one at Micro Soft because of the long three day weekend at Easter. No time for any Editx stuff. Went to El Paso

Friday Apr 8. Saw churches + bars. Then caverns at Carlsbad Saturday. Came back to El Paso. Easter Service at 11:00 Sunday. Then dinner at H. Inn and bullfight in Juarez. Difficulty getting back. Trying to take the bars & getting lost in Juarez. The Tuesday Apr 5 of that week, the thought popped into my mind of the possibility of working for Ryan McFarland. I asked myself why I hadn't thought that earlier. I guess three reasons

1) I wanted to consider the Xerox sort of work. See letter to Jack Lawrence & also consider all possible avenues as I had that first weekend.

2) It was important for me to sign Bill's nondisclosure agreement. If I had gotten a job when I was in L.A. & come back & didn't sign the nondisc
