To: of the President Stanford University, California

From: John R. Elling 19 April

Gentlemen:

Got your recent letter and will sieze a minute out of the middle of this mess to answer it. Would like to come back to the school after the war, unless I stay with the army Shall have four months of accrued hours and the desire to ease myself back into the teaching profession through the college -- seems to me the shock would be much less severe, and shall need the review. My work would be in education and the biological sciences, [?] a little general academic work as an antidote. Should like a place where my wife and I could have a small apartment togehter -- something of the style of one of the better ourist courts would do, if quiet enough for concentration. My aim would be to complete work on my aster's degree -- had some Stanford credits for the 1937 summer, which were transferred to the Colorado State College of Education for 1939's summer session as Stanford was too expensive that year. However, would like to get my degree at Stanford and have saved the money already. You might tell me how I stand for such a project if you have the time. For extra-curricular activities, hope the ROTC still has horses.

Very truly yours, John R. Elling
