The Application

Says Gladatone:– "I never invented that measure:– Twas Parnell who framed it. – I bowed to his pleasure." Says Parnell.— I never, I'm sure, should have named it.– "I only said Yes, it was Gladstone who framed it".

Now, both being "Arcades", skilled to tell stories, Alike circumventing the Whigs & the Tories, In such a contention, O how shall we settle If Parnell or Gladstone best merit the Kettle?

Their tales are a marvel, a mystery, sly as Some statements recorded of one Ananias. Where both tell an equally masterly whopper, To each be awarded a Kettle of copper. J.P. M.

* "According to his (Mr Gladstone's) own showing, "Mr Parnell is the author of the scheme which he "(Mr Gladstone) has fathered." Times, 26 June 1886

† "The settlement which Mr. Gladstone & his Government "have offered us: which we have accepted." Mr. Parnell at Portsmouth 25 June 1886.
