John McArthur Esqr London

Sir

I hand you herewith Sales of Sandal wood pr [per] Daphne, net Proceeds 9217.90. Dollars. I regret the Business has not turned out more favorable, the accounts you will receive pr this fleet will inform you particularly on this Score. The Highest Cash Price to be obtained was 12 or 13 Dollars pr Pecul [picul — unit of weight; Asia] giving Liberty to reject Roots &c I thought & you will think with me better to allow 14 Dollars pr pecul as a Cash Price & barter it as I cd. for Cargo. on a Comparison with other Sales which you will receive, you will find that the Wood pr the Daphne has returned you better prices than what you shipped direct.

No opportunity has offered of addressing you Since my arrival here, & I now hand you Respondentia Bonds for the amount of Sales 9217. Dollars with 25 p% making 11521. Dlr. [Pencil note:] 28.5.12

Sir/ Rio de Jameiro 28 May 1812

Mr Hannibal McArthur has applied to me, to close your account with the late Establishment of Messrs. Hullett Brothers &C, carried on in the name of H L & C Jones. The Goods consigned by you to them, were sold by Mr. Chas. Jones to a Merchant of Buenos Ayres, and the Account of the same, was adjusted by Mr. Chas. Widder under a Power of Attorney, and with the Orders of Messrs Hullett Brothers &C. As I left Rio de Janeiro about a month after you sailed, and remained upwards of eight months in Buenos Ayres, I can give no farther Explanation without referring to the Books carried to England by Mr. Chas. Jones, and delivered to Messrs, Hullett Borthers &C

I expect daily to sail for England when I shall make it my Business to call on you

Your most obt hble Serv H L Jones
