He can talk certainly and fight in debate
but can he write? or originate? and
will he consent to be governed or guided
by those persons who can? I also greatly
object to Darvall who will turn his coat
as often as it may seem profitable to
perform the exploit. I have little
confidence in Holt. [indecipherable] Nichols will
be honest enough and intelligent, but
even he does not give me much hope
of being greatly useful. The work then
will have fallen upon Manning & you.

I think it probable that if no great
cause of offence has arisen that the
members in opposition will be rather
weakened than increased during the
recess and that if the "Cabinet" can agree
upon the proposition of useful measures
they will command majorities difft.
to defect factious opposition. But
will the Cabinet agree in the propostion
of some measures, and will it avoid
unsound ones? These are questions
which I cannot help speculating upon.

There is scarcely any one in town now
