painful position – and the Aunt
with whom she remained in 68-69
in Scotland (widow of Cap Ws brother)
gladly received her as an inmate.
Ellis will have a little income from
her Fathers estate and will join in
her Aunts menage. there is an only
daughter with whom Ellis used to go to
school after she left me in 1860.

And she is attached to Aunt & [indecipherable]
My duty calls me at times to
Denmark, and were it only for this
reason alone I would not ask Ellis
to live with me – she will have been
here now 6 months, and will visit
me from time to time, but feels
independent (and I believe be far
happier) in consequence she is now 26!!!
She is a good deal altered I think
but since she came here poor girl she
has undergone this terrible ordeal of
abuse and unkindness, and really
I admire her self command
her health has suffered but I have
never heard a word of bitterness
nor of the anger I should have felt
