I propose to her to increase her means
by taking charge of furnished houses
for which service badly performed – I
have had to pay 10/ to 14/ a week -
but at present she wishes for nothing
and as a proof of how unfit she is for
service – whilst here for 10 days whilst
fixing up her room (had the smoking
room for a bed room) she had her
breakfast brought to her in bed daily!
but nothing could tear from her the
slightest admission of unfitness!
I am sure I have acted prudently in
this, although I dont think I have yet
a successor in the present aspirant
for the situation (now on trial)
George says Jane has gone & as old
Mr Laski's fool said to him –
"It will be a lang [original text crossed out- time] while afore she
pits her nez in sich a het nest"
(anglais) "puts her nose in such a hot nest" –
I have heard nothing [from] those old
servants for a good while – but now I
am here old Meadows is sure to come
if the poor old fellow is alive
