Mr Kennicott:
Dear Sir:
Yours of the 26th ult. is just rec'd, on my return from a trip abroad.
I regret to have to inform you that nothing came into my hands for you, or for the Northwestern University. I should have been most happy to receive, and forward, any thing in that way; but my department was strangled by the policy of the Society.

I envy you the pleasure you must have had in your late northern town. I am doing nothing in the cause of science, having all my time engrossed in professional duties. Should I ever get to Chicago, in connection with its university, I hope to have more time for this sort of luxury than I have ever had.
I have no collection of my own, having left all the collections of my early labors in N. Caro-lina, my native State.
If you should ever have occasion to make

inquiries concerning the phenomenon of South Ill, I shall be happy to respond to any letters, to the best of my ability.
Yours truly, S. [illegible]. McMasters
