The Grove Jan 28th 1858

Dear brother of mine -

I have neglected writ= =ing to you for the last two weeks, and I have a good excuse for doing it, I presume you have heard from some of the folk that I have been in Chicago that length of time. I enjoyed myself right well: made a great many visits and calls, of which I will give you a discrip= =tion. To commence with I made Mrs Cutting quite a long visit, she was – as she always is – very agreeabl, Mr Cuttings sister and some other friends were there –

Mrs Walker and her brother Mr Tiffany, spent a day at Mrs Cuttings while I was there, Mr T - enquired after you: and Mrs Walker sent her love to my “brother Bob"-

I stayed three days a Mrs Clarks. – I liked Mary much better than I ever did before, she is really very pleasant, though if she dislikes any one she is apt to let them know it. Bob is at home this Winter he has improved a great deal since I last saw him, Carrie sung for me “lots” of your favorite songs – she sings very well – The all wish to be remembered to you –

I spent a day at Mrs Dr Andrews; she is boarding, - in the same house where she used to live. – with a pleasant lady - I went with Mrs Andrews to the musium and the Dr. shewed us all of his specimens, of which he has a fine lot, I was glad to have an opportunity to see them. I dined at Mrs Updykes, Julie is as well as usual, she spends all the time, in attending, and getting ready for – parties - I can’t

see that she improves in the least - I spent a day a Dr Freer’s they are all well, except the Dr himself who is working too hard –

I called on Jonnie Drumond – she looked as pretty and good humored as possible, seemed to be glad to see me and asked particularly after you I think Mrs Drumond a pleasant lady –

I called on Mrs Shermon and "Mortha" they were as agreeable as ever –

I made other calls which would not interest you –

Charlie has just arrived. – and he is talking with Father and Mother. and Miss Boyden, Mr Clark, Major, Cora, Bruno, and P. C. are all talking just as fast and loud as “ever they can. –" so you may suppose my ideas are not extreamly clear, however I hope you will excuse all mestakes.

Uncle Wills folk are going to let their farm to a “gentleman and lady. -” this time they are sure that they are going to get the right ones, and I trust they will – I happened to be at Uncle Wills offise when the arrangements were talked about – The people who are to take the farm I should judge from their manners and looks were quite intelligent, the lady plays on the piano and they both sing. Aunt Carrie thinks she will have Fan and Grace take lessons – Mr and Mrs Childs are to board with Aunt Carrie, Mrs Childs is to sew what time she has to spare from the care of her child who is but four months old – and when aunt Carrie is gone she is to “take charge” of affars – I fancy they won’t get out for more than two weeks without a “fuss” Aunt Carrie will soon get tired of having them sing and play, they both like music very much

and will want to sing evenings as you can imagine Aunt Carrie will be delighted for the first few days. - but after that –-- I pity Mr and Mrs Childs – Aunt Carrie told them that the society about here was “very good", and that her children would take a great deal of care of Mrs Childes baby, and that it would be a great pet with the whole family.

I am exceeingly healthy this
