Monday Morning March 8th [circled] 145

It has come round cold, again - a very singular winter. By the way, you have never as I can recollect, said a word about the weather, condition of the streets, - and such matters - Nor have you told as how you have managed for money - items of weekly expense &c. - Mrs Cutting and Guy came out yesterday. The talk of our friends, and even relations, is very serious, - and Mother has, perhaps, decided for the best, in refusing the attentions of Mrs C. and Mrs Walker. We are sorry to deny Dalce the pleasures and advantages of their society - which appears unexceptionable; and is very kindly offered, - but the gossip is serious, and may be justified by appearances perhaps.

My eyes are much better, - though I can not read. I am not so low spirited as I was, last autumn and early winter. I am fast becoming reconciled to the chances. If I could only do something to earn money - if only a trifle - I should feel well enough. And something may "turn up", yet. Hundreds of men with not a fourth of my capacity receive good official appointments, or agencies, and I am not without friends and hope for the future
