The Grove April 19th 1858
Dear Bob -
No letters from you to day - A letter came for you, from Will Welch, enclosed in one to me; He did not know where to send it I suppose -
It has rained all the time since sunday night so you can imagine the delightful condition of the roads, nursery, and house - Laurance was obliged to go to Chicago with a load this morning - Bruno went with him. I expect they both got very wet going it, they will probobly have to stay all night.
The ground is so wet that the "troops" can't do much, they are digging up peach stumps.
Frank and Annie went back Monday, it did not rain when they started and I persume they got back all safe -
Ann Winshel and her Father were here yesterdy to spend the afternoon, Ann is still in school, she is fitting herself for a teacher, and I have no doubt she will be an eccellent one.

She is certainly a very good scholar.
I had a letter from Charlie to day, He is well and says he is going to "take it easy" as every one does down there -
It is quite cold to day; and we can not keep any fire on account of the smoke, which worries us almost to death -
It has been so wet of leate that we haven't been able to get any flowers -
Co pets Jack a great deal, and is just as neat as usual -
There is no news to tell.

Mrs Updike & children here after trees - can't stop to write - Lawrence & Bruno not home yet - Evidently staid in town [word struck out] last night - Trust no accident to old "Don" or the old waggon - proba=bly waiting for the trees expected from Rochester - I suppose you will be getting ready for Baltimore when this reaches you - Old Father
