Dear Sir -
A few days since when in Chicago I learned that you had gone to Washington, to assist in preparing the house [dot?] for the Pacific R R Survey, I have been desirous of seeing you ever since hearing of your interest in Nat History
In my travels in various portions of this State I frequently meet with the inquiry: - Do you know Young Kennicott? and I am getting quite ashamed of my ignorance.
I am as yet quite a stranger in the West. where I find only a few who

are devoted to Scientific pursuits - - most being earnestly engaged in the pursuit of minerals. However: from many indications, I am satisfied that the people of the North West. wil encourage a few active laborers - in carrying on a thorough Scientific Survey -
I am greatly obliged to you for - the favor - of a member ship in the Chicago Academy of Nat Hist. & wil devote some of my Collecitions to that Institution.
We are preparing a letter of instructions or directions for preserving specimens of Natural History and we desire your assistance or advice in Entomology. You have made collections in Ills. and can give

a very practical letter of directions: Please forward soon to me at Bloomington & oblige -
During the Summer I have been very successful in making collections for the University Museum. But having a vast number of duplicates, I am prepared to exchange. We are most deficient in insects, reptiles &c. and would be glad of your cooperation in this behalf.
Write us at your early leisure and oblige Yours &c
