Thursday Morning The Grove Dec 9th 1858

Dear Brother mine -

I recieved a very short letter from you this morning, but small favors are thankfully received,

Seems to me you don't write as many letters as you used to, what is the reason? I hope you think of us all often.

The weather has been extremely cold for the last two days, we have all been shivering about the house and have scarcely ventured out at all. Notwithstanding the cold however the folk from The Folly were here yesterday. Mr. Brislot, their teacher, came with them, he is a curious kind of a man, I can't say that I admire him particularly, but I think he will prove a good teacher for them. He believes in strict discipline.

I had four letters this morning, one from Delia B, among the rest. I suppose she is at home by this time.

Charlie will come home the last of this week probably. I do not suppose he will stay very long.

We are all invited to go to The Folly on Christmas day, there is to be a family party, and some strangers are coming also. The Drummond girls and Henry Updyke are to come out from Chicago, with Ransom and George.

I expect we shall have a fine time I only wish you and Charlie could be here. Where do you expect to spend Christmas?

This is a beautiful day, very clear and bright, if the snow was only a little deeper, and we had some good horses I should feel inclined to take a sleigh right but under the circumstances I shall endeavor to think it is much pleasanter

staying in the house and reading writing and sewing than it would be out of doors.

The children have rather a cold time walking to school every morning.

Mr Chase sends his kindest regards and says what time do you intend to travel in the south?, as he would like to travel more there himself, and possibly you might go together.

I just finished skining a pretty little shrew for you. Jack was very anxious to devour it, but I did not allow him to do so, much to his disappointment.

I have been making shoes this week, I have made two pairs of quite pretty gaiters and the whole cost - except time - was three cents a pair. the two pairs will last as long as one pair of those that we buy. I have not time to write more

With much love Sister Dalce
