My dear Sir

I received your favor, dated at the Smithsonian Institution, in due season and lost no time in urging your project upon M Judd - I noting concern with you that the present is a favorable opportunity for a Zoological Survey [illegible] paper with the Geological, and I sincerely hope and wish that your desires in this respect may be gratified

I have been so little connected with Public affairs or Public Men, that I find myself of little or no use in promoting such enterprises, but you may be assured I will omit no opportunity to give the scheme a lift - My family at home are all quite well Louise has been in the State of New York since last Summer. She has been in very ill health but we are hoping that for the past month or two, she has been grad -ually recovering a sound state of health
