On my return from Springfield I found your favor of the 30th inst.

Your commisation[?] to S Francis Esq Cor Secty of Ill State Agrl. Socity was presented to the Executive Board of that Socity; The opinion entertained by some of the board (the majority present) was that it was asking the recommendation of the board to the Legis lature of an appropriation of [page torn] the benefit of the Smithsonian Institute (I did not so view it) which prevent the passage of the recomdatn os requtd by you; I regretted it; -

I will enclose & transmit your commution[?] on the subject to our Senator from this district asking him to call the attention of others to the subject It would be a valuable accession to our state if the survey could be made & the reports [illegible] with plates [illegible] &c.
