The Grove Jan 19 -

Dear Bob-

I have been roaming around in the state a good deal this past autumn & winter, and have, among other things which came in my way, learned of some little affairs which may interest you. Though I really suppose you must be kept posted in them by your friends all about in the state - I did, indeed, write you from Springfield a few days, say 2 wks ago, & then; when I came to think how little I knew of your plans I deemed it better to refrain from troubling

you - and I now write you at the instance of your good monther - briefly - just to say that the Natl Histy Society have thrown in their bill for an act of incorperation & for aid & claim that the survey which you propose, should also come under the general head & not stand alone as a "private" (I use their word) affair - They say they are willing that you should have charge of that dept exclusively & if you choose to work with them will do all in their power to assist you. I will endeavor to promote your welfare - or rather, of that branch of the [illegible] - Survey in any way - They are particularly anxious that you should

join them & "will meet you half way" - If needs be will go _further_ than that - You know who are at the bottom of the other movement & what their influence is - They claim to have a pretty strong arm to back them up in all the friends of the Normal school who will leave no means unused to frustrate your plan if it is to be prosecuted singly & alone - But if joined with theirs will [illegible] their cordial support -

Your Mother suggested that you would be glad to know this much, so I give it you for what it is worth - If I knew your views I could be instrumental in forwarding them in your absence

I would cheerfully go to Springfield & attend to the outside work which often needs to be done in such cases.

I need not say that what I have written you are at liberty to use in any way - but I would prefer that my name be not used in any way - for I would not [illegible] seem to have committed any breach of confidence - If you are not already [illegible] in this matter, you may be pleased to be while it can not but do them any harm what I have said to you

Your measure has good friends in the Legislature & may with proper attention be carried, especially if not opposed

Sincerely Yrs C.S.C
