The Grove February 6^th 1859

Dear Friend Robert.

I came here from Egypt the third of this month left Charlie on the second he was pretty well when I left him only did not have any good tobacco wich he could not get down there and of course missed it very much so much that it almost made him sick but I guess he will get along now for I send him some fine spanish smoling tobacco by express as soon as I arrived in Chicago. I like Egypt pretty well on the whole; still it does not quite come up to the standard I had put down for my homestead for the main thing is it lacks permenant water as far as have seen and I love to see a running brook. I should like to know what you think about the region of Jones= borough

I took Mr Chase to the depot on Friday he was d going down to Springfield. Frank & Major came from Chi= cago last night it snowed about all day yesterday but not enough to make sleighing so I guess I shall have to go in Chicago with the wagon tomorrow wich I dont fanci much in winter. Your little Terrier is getting along first rate. I have not as yet received any Patent Office report's I wish you could have them send to me and oblige your Friend
