La Pierres House Rocky Mts Sunday - Sept 16th(?) 1860
My Dear Paternal
I find this to be a hole in the Rocky Mts instead of being on the farther side as I expected - We came across in a little less than four days - Had a fine time plenty of snow but no rain. We were constant ly wet from wading through the low places - or rather wet places - In fact it is all wet except on the rocks - tops of the hills like a dipped sponge. - Ive no time to [illegible] about it now as the Indians return to Ruls[?] River [illegible] and Ive only a few minutes - OLIVE
I expected to have the D-l's own time coming across and was agreeably disappointed.

Lockhart and I and the Youkon Interpreter stopped on the top of the highest pass and despite a good snow storm got as jolly tight as ever I was in my life, and a good deal more so than ever any body was in that region before I wot.
The rate at which we went down this side of the mountain must have astonished our natives. - We are off for the You kon tomorrow. Ill have jolly times this winter and will write you better letters than before.
Love to mother & the rest
Affectionately Son Bob
