Steamer Golden Rule Near Graytown Nicaragua March 30th 1865

My Dear Mother } and the rest of you } Tomorrow we land at Graytown and after 3 to 5 days spent going up the San Juan River across Lake Nicaragua and on a portage of 12 miles on 'tother side we hit the Pacific and we then take two weeks to San Francisco - or "Frisco" as tis now commonly called here.

I'm well and Jolly but awfully, fearfully sleepy & lazy. - All my party quite well - Old Bichoff and Bannister were sea sick for a few days. - Tho very rough none of the rest of us got sea sick so I enjoyed my first view of life on the ocean wave amazingly - My last man Dr Rothrock is a trump he and Dall

are far the best of the party they and Bannister are true as steel while the rest are very good material and I shall get em into good shape ere long. Charlie Pease is about 12 years old but Ill bet he'll grow fast. He has got good stuff in him. Bannister is a good fellow but so inferally modest that I cant rely on him among men - He will come out among the Indians however. -

It now seems probably that my position will be one of much more responsibility and authority than I had supposed it would be. - I may perhaps be placed in charge of building the entire line from Peak Mts in Brit Col umbia to mouth of Youkon. - So much the better.

Old Bischoff Brot the two hunting shirts. I was very glad to get 'em as Ansted failed to send

send those he made. I got another lot made in Phila and some velveteen ones. -

Apropos Ive advised Flint to get a hunting shirt - Husted promised me to make him one for $7 - litre mine. - - It will be better than a summer coat and cost less money.

I didnt sell my 50. shares stock yet. The present panic prevented my getting a fair price. It will be sold by Mr Cutting for me and the money paid to George Walker Meantime $600. will be paid to Geo Walker by Mr Wilder of [illegible] Co on my salary in monthly installments commencing June 15. - of this the boys will have $500. -

I asked Dall to write you particulars and I think he did so. I shall write more fully from west side - Im too hot sleepy & lazy to write now

Matters and things generally seem all right.

Dont encourage Bruno's coming to The Grove much - He cant resist the charms of The Dolce far niente there. -
