Rockford March 15"/49.

Dr Kennicott.

My Dear Sir

Yours of 17" Feby was answered by me on 20th ult. Since writing you I have concluded to do something in the line of grafting[underlined] on my homestead this season. - I wish a few scions from some of your best varieties of apples[underlined] & plums - I have some plums. - Can you forward me some in a box by leaving the same with "Neeley & Lawrence" - Forwarding & Storage Merchants Chicago. When the roads become good I can get the scions from Chicago

I suppose they can be so put[underlined] up[underlined] that they will not receive injury. - I wish - "Early Harvest" "Northern spy", - Lady's sweeting & Pound sweeting This last is a coarse apple but you know a plentiful bearer. - I wish some of this kind. Please send me three[underlined] varieties of your best[underlined] Early[underlined]. - Autumn[underlined] & winter[underlined] apples - 3 best[underlined] of Each[underlined] kind. I rely on your judgment & taste. I agree with you in your excellent article in the "Prairie Farmer" of Jany last that we should confine [illegible] to the Cultivation of a few[underlined] of the Choicest[underlined] varieties. Your articles in the Prairie Farmer at various times have met with my hearty [Commine?] I may be able to visit the Grove Nursery before the time

for grafting. but as the roads now are so bad I despair of enjoying this pleasure. I wish a number of things from your nursery. - I can get no pears[underlined] in this region. - My peaches are all winter killed they bore last year. - I wish some ornamental shrubbery and a few varieties of your best bulbous[underlined] roots. Could these be packed & forwarded safely with the scions as aforesaid? I wwrite you as to the scions[underlined] as I suppose they should be cut soon[underlined]. You will please label them. and [drawing of a hand pointing to the right] retain them till you hear from me - I yet hope[underlined] to visit you. - Please write me at your earliest Convenience[underlined] as to Fruits. - shrubs - roots &c &c Any thing from you will be interesting to me, - How far is the Grove from Chicago? And can I not reach your place [inthent?] going to Chicago, Which will be my best road? The slough this side of Chicago will be impassable Many weeks yet - or nearly impassable. Can I not reach you without Crossing it There are some thrifty seedling apple trees not far from R. which I can obtain without much difficulty. They are 4. years old. - Now Sir how will it do to take up these seedlings - set them out in the orchard and graft them the present[underlined] season If they are carefully transplanted will they not sustain the scions with sufficient sap? I wish to set scions in these trees immediately[underlined] after[underlined] transplanting or as soon[underlined] after as you think it will do. Please write me and send me

My dear Dr - I am taxing your time and patience I fear by these requests But I hope it will yet be in my power to reciprocate the favors I may receive from you. - Please write me and not forward any thing till I write you again. - I shall try to visit your place. I may be detained[strikethrough] prevented by bad roads or detained by my professional duties while travelling the Circuit at our Spring Courts in the neighboring Counties

With sentiments great respect I subscribe myself - in haste Yours Sincerely
