Upper Alton May 5th 1857 To Messrs John A & Chas Kennicott West Northfield Ill The Lot of trees came safe to hand after much ???ing about the time of transit - They were so well packed however that they would have stood much longer delay- They came in much better condition than a lot I get of Messr Stewart & Sons of Quincy or W Little Dixon although not so long out. I have got them out on a wheat field of Canada check/Spring Wheat and threw about a bushel of manure around each tree after plantingAnd if we are not wiped out by the tail of a comet or worse still rank, hellish pap?? of insane ??, made so by political strife. I shall hope for a good orchard of the earliest point. Of Real Genus & ? Aestracary shall put out about seven hundred trees this Spring-- I here enclose your draft for your bill as directed. Respectfully your Abt? Servant Geo W Sony
