Grapewood, March 20th 1858 Dr J.A. Kennicott Dear SirI enclose a list of a few apple trees which a neigh bor & ourselves want. We want something to fill a gap between Early Summer & late fall with which we are supplied. We have room but for a few trees . Please send them as soon as convenient express directed to me. Care of Blair Ballinger & Co, Alton, Ill. Designate them some how so we can tell them apart. Send the bills separate. I will remit imme diately. The same neighbor wants 8 Evergreens & another gentele- man in Carrollton asked me to order six for him-- I think I can send you several other orders - & thought it best to wait a few

days until I see some of my friends who I think will send.~ The evergreens set out in Carrollton last fall from Roches ter & Iowa turned out very badly. Nearly all are dead or dying - The gentleman who want half a dozen of you. Planted some of those & all are dead.- It is nearly as bad in Jerseyville with large numbers brought from First's nursery at Rochester. Ours are as fresh & green as ever & are the admira tion of everyone that sees them. I think you can sell fully as many here as lst year.--Sixteen out of the seventeen I set out at home are alive & only three or four out of the whole lot of 48 are deadWe have very warm weather &

vegetation is advancing rapidly Trees are putting out. Peach trees will be in bloom in a few days. About a dozen of the crocus & gladiolas you sent are in full blom.- some of them several days ago- Nearly all the plants are showing the themsel ves above ground. It is fully a month earlier than last year so fear as vege tation is concerned. Please put in withmy trees & in clude in bill hald a dozen best perpetual roses . Same number of dahllia roots- tell me how to plant & cultivate the latterI have but one or two perpetu al roses. the Rivens? is oneI suppose as the seasin is so much earlier it will be necessary to plant evergreens ealier than last year .
