Dear Major

Your kind favor of the 5th inst came to hand to day You did not direct your letter quite right as I am at present about three[strikethrough] hun[strikethrough] two hundred and thirty three miles from Buffalo and only eight miles from Charlie I went to see him last week and found him perfectly sane and he came down to Utica with me to see me off in the Stage he is in pretty good spirits but you cannot expect that he will be as Cheerfull at first as though he had had nothing to make him so but I trust that after he gets Home he will recover his usual spirits and he told me so he said that one could not help feeling sad after having such an afliction as he has had he says that he thought to much and had to much on his mind and says that he shall be carefull after this

I had been expecting a letter from you Major for a long time and thought you had forgotten me but in the last letter I wrote Charlie I told him to tell you to write to me I do not know whether this had the

effect or not at any rate I got a Letter and I am satisfied The next time you write to Squire Bob tell him that if I am not very much mistaken he owes me a letter and a good long apology for not answering

We are preparing to have a Fancy Dress Ball here and I am very busy to day and shall be all day tomorrow it comes off tomorrow night I shall send you a circular with this letter excuse looks and shortness this time
