Commerce Miss. 1st April 1866

Dear Sir It is late to night but as I hear that Dr Reid Judge Wright's Yankee that gets hands for him goes up in a day or two I wish to send you a short note to say that we are getting on pretty well. I have rolled the logs on about 150 acres & shall roll more after awhile I have begun to plow & have about 40 acres bedded but am getting on pretty rapidly in this respect & should feel no uneasyness about this part of my work if my mules were not all too young to admit of hard pushing I have a heavy team for my hands (14 mules) & hope by dint of great care & attention to keep them up. I found it necessary to send to Memphis for Hay as several of my neighbours had lost mules by hard work & no rough feed - Judge W. lost 6 & Mr Potter 3 or 4 so that I became alarmed & sent by Mr Stone who went to purchase for himself be brought me 12 bales but the difficulty of getting it from the river now is such that it almost precludes the purchase of supplies of any kind. We have had the water up now for 3 or 4 weeks but it has not interferred with my operations materially. Mr Polk's place however is at least half under water & some of the negroe quarters are untenable. The stock here is in fine condition we have 10 calves of your cows one that I bought & one of McCulley's that I borrowed when we first came but can not return till the water goes down. I have 8 sows 1 boar 9 shoats & 17 pigs I killed during March 22 small hogs making me nearly 2000 lbs of meat so that I hope to get on for some time without being obliged to buy meat & my corn with last till May at least. I expect to plant 25 acres of corn this week for early use
