DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1794,

October,
21, Clear and sharp, coldest Morning this fall. Wm Edwards brought a Deed for his
land, which Ben Taylor & I acknowledged. John Bickers agreed to go with a cart
with Ben Taylor's negroes for 7/- p/ day & found. Sent 6 lb Butter to J. Taylor
he paid me £9.16.6. William Taylor, B. Taylor & I went to J. Taylor's. C. Taylor &
family, Reu Taylor, Mr T. Bell & Aunt Thomas were there. John Taylor in evening
Said he shall set out for Georgia tomorrow. William & Benja Taylor came home
with me. I settled and paid them their proportions of the Estate of C. Taylor
dec'd.

Sent £40. to Jonathan Taylor by W. Taylor.

John Leathers was here at night abt 2 hours.

22, Clear & cold, ice this morning. Brothers James, Charles, William & Benjamin Tay-
lor, J. Taylor jr. John Bickers, & M. Biggers breakfasted here. Maj'r Moore
came but did not breakfast - Reuben Taylor came after breakfast, I paid him £20.
and took rec. for the whole he had received. William, Reuban & Benjamin Taylor
with Banjamin Taylor's negroes and a girl W. Taylor bought of Catlett Conway, set
out about 9 o'clock, on their journey to Kentucky. Miss Peggy Bell joined them
at the road - John Biggers with a cart to go with them to Fauqueir Court house.
They intend to John Pendleton's to-night. William Taylor left £49.10.0 in my
hands to pay C. Conway for the girl he bought. Ben Taylor left £6. in my hands
for F.S. Taylor. Sent a trun(New Corn) to Mill.

23, No so cool as yesterday, dary weather. Loaded A Quisenberry's waggon (Patrick
Bell) with 52 Bus' Wheat - he found provision and to have 1/- p/ every 60 lb. for
carriage to Blairs. Tay'r Jones brought me sundries from Blairs, his load 50
Bus' weighed 47.12. I loaded him again 52 Bus. and found him both loads - he to
have 8d p/ bushel. J. Taylor sent for me to dinner. Col. E. Pendleton there. C Taylor
called here returning from Col. Madison's. Gave M. Biggers a midling - 10 lb
Bacon.

24, Fair morning - Smoky hazy evening. I shot two Squirrels - Dined alone. White Sow
had 7 pigs last night. 1 died Sunday night.

25, Began to rain ab't day & continued moderately.

26, (SUNDAY) Rainy last night & all day, strong N.E. wind. I staid at home - much
water in low grounds & near great swell in River.

27, Ceased raining in night, cleared & fine day. I went to Court. Had Edwardss
deed proved. Paid N. Hyde balance due him 32/5. Paid A. Quisenbery 48/- for car-
rying 47, 58/60 Bus Wheat. Paid ___ Henshaw for a pair Shoes 10/-. Paid A Downey
3/4 Wharton Ransdell wrote me was short of the money we changed the 18th inst.
Paid Catlett Conway 16 Crowns for Wm Taylor £5.5.7. Rec'd of Mr. Isaac Davis
£3. for John Shifflet in part of his debt to Col. James Taylor. Rec'd of Col T.
Barbour 14/- the balance of his bond to Shifflet ass'd to Col J. Taylor & gave
him bond. Borrowed of G. Barbour 8 dollars to be ret'd tomorrow. I returned the
8 dollars the 28, to G. Barbour.

28, Moderate weather, smoky. I rode to Court house. Court sat about the roads & rose
early - J. Taylor went to Culpeper from Court, his family being at T. Barbour jr'
J. Taylor hr went to Mr Cowherd's last night to have a Deer hunt to day. Slaughter
& Banks opened a store last week in Jon'n Taylor's.

29, Hazy, smoky and warm. I said at home expecting T. Jones, who came late in even-
ing & loaded with Wheat, 50 Bushels - I found him as usual - let him have a dol-
lar.

30, A few drops rain last night, smoky warm day. I went to C. Taylor's & got the
promise that John should come to saw tomorrow - Corn house logs. C. Taylor's fam-
ily at C. Conway's.

31, Cloudy - very windy, a smart shower in evening. John & Frank sawed 8 logs, making
16 pieces for the Corn house - M. Biggers & Davy getting boards. Gave the work-
ing negroes their shoes.
