1894 Wednesday, March 14 - 1894

The Secretary of War, D. S. Lamont, appointed me one of the Gettysburg Battlefield Commissioners, vice Gen. W. H. Forney of Ala. who died Jan'y 16-1894. This appointment was made, without any application or knowledge of it on my part, through the influence of Senator M. W. Ransom of North Carolina.

Monday April 2

Arrived at Gettysburg this day at 1.20 p.m. and entered upon my duties as Commissioner. My colleagues, Col. John P. Nicholas whom I met this day for the first time, and Col. J. B. Bachedler, were here and we dined together at the McClellan House or Hotel Gettysburg where I lodged for two days.

April 4

On this day I engaged quarters and board at W. F. Freeman's on corner of Baltimore & Breckenridge streets at six dollars per week.

Tuesday May 1

Made trip to Washington on permit of Secretary of War on business of the Commission.

May 9

With permit of War Department Col. Nicholson and myself with Engineer Cope visited the Battlefield of Antietam and spent two days there. We met Gen. Harry Heth, one of the [illegible] there.
