My Dear friend

Mulberry Grove Feb 24, 1838

It was with much satisfaction that I recd your very acceptable letter pr. the last mail. It always contributes much to my gratification to hear of the continued good health of my near & dear friends. I was much pleased to hear of your safe arrival from the 'far west,' and would have addressed you a little sooner could I have been _____ of your return. We are all in tolerable health. Julia is in daily expectation of the appearance of a little stranger. the Dogs grow rapidly and it is my oppinion that I. [?] W. is hard to beat even by one of the same common stock. I hope we shall have an opportunity to compare not long first. I shall look untill I see you and my dear sister with us.

The information communicated of the Dr & my sister [E?] gave us much satisfaction as I have not recd a letter from him since last July. He seems to have lost all recollection of No. Carolina & of old friends and connections - but better late than never. If you can visit us shortly keep the letter directed to me untill you come down - if not open the letter and take the notes out and keep them untill we meet

reveal the letter and direct it to [?] for me. I am anxious to hear what excuse the Dr. puts fourth for not writing sooner.

Mr. I. [?] D [?} and familiy now reside in Chowan County near Edenton. Mr. [Jas.?} Johnston as an inducement to Mr. [Wynn?][ to settle near him gave him a most excellent farm -- provisions of all kinds -- crop of the last year --- in fact every thing to make it complete. This is the place [illegible] form whence Sally Anne dates her letter. Since the death 0f Miss Fanny Johnston -- her younger sister Miss Hellen is extrememely desirous of having the constant company of her relation & particular friend Mrs [Wynn?]- this I believe to have been the moving cause of the present arrangement.

The winter has been much more favourable than the preceeding one as to healthfulness --but still we have lost some of our most valuable citiziens.-- of these Col. Randolph & T W Norfleet were perhaps of your acquaintance. Matilda will know Mrs [Liles?] of MBoro -- these have gone to test the truths of Eternity -- and the places that now know us will soon know us no more forever. We know not how soon it may be said us he a she is gone to give an account for the deeds

done in the body. Our inanimate bodies may be soon deposited in their narrow tombs there to rest untill summoned to stand at the awfull Bar of God.

Let these solemn truths rest with proper weight on each of your minds my dear Bro. & sister. and may we all be finally reunited where parting [with?] [or?] no more forever.

Remember us to all our friends in Nash--. Tell Mrs Westray we should be delighted to see her at our hous and that she must accompany you and Matilda to Hartford.

Our best love to Matilda Keep little Samul. for and believe me ever to be your attached

Dear Uncle Turner.

I waited with much patience, & great anxiety to hear from you-- but to no avail. Uncle Turner, do I deserve such treatment? >If I'm guilty of any crime whatever, I am unconscious of it, unless its for my not writing oftener last year--but thought I had atoned for that I wrote you a long letter about [5th?] April which I endeavored to make as interesting as possible. I fear it was not from your not answering it. I think I have not been negligent in writing to my relations. But have not exactly, come up to my promise. I reccollect perfectly well that I promised to write you every two months. But learning that I could not write an intersting letter every two mos (when I had so many to write) I defered writing many times which I shoyuld not have done had it have been otherwise. I onlly have to say that crops generally very good. both corn and Cotton. I saw Nathaniel Drake last week heard from all of my old No. Ca. acquaintances. James Hunter, is getting on pretty
