Friday March 2

Same -- Snow melting made it very muddy -- Toward evening got cold & freezing & an inch or two more snow fell -- PM I was at Gold Hill -- another 3 ct ass't levied on Centennial -- Evening writing -- Bed at 2 -- cloudy & cold --

Saturday March 3

Same -- colder -- Several light snowsqualls -- Was at Mt. Davidson Lodge this evening -- Bed at 2

Sunday March 4

Same -- PM heavy snow storm -- 6 inches -- Evening clear & freezing -- Wrote letters to Alfred Phillips Jr, Austin, & WR Litchfield Santa Cruz -- Bed 2 --

Jim Hardwick paid "Ivy Leaf" Irish bagpipes Sleighing Gold Hill

Monday March 5

Variable -- 6 inches snow & good sleighing -- Jim Hardwick paid me $40 on his insurance today & I delivered him his policy -- He still owes me $5 -- balance -- Evening at Opera House -- Play "Ivy Leaf" by a company from the East -- Very good -- Heard the Irish Bagpipes, for the first time in my life -- The theater was genaely crowded in fact full -- Bed at 1, clear and cold -- about 26 above z --

Tuesday March 6

Same -- Went to Gold Hill on evening train -- About town some on insurance -- Evening,

visited [Wildey?] Lodge, No 1, I.O.O.F. for the first time -- One new member, Wilson initiated -- I was called upon & had a good little talk -- as did Kimball and Aires who with 1/2 dozen others who came down from Va -- I walked home with them -- rough road --

and hard frozen -- Second & last night of the WH Powers "Ivy Leaf" company -- Very good house -- I returned from Gold Hill too late to attend -- Bed 2

Wednesday March 7

Variable -- muddy -- About town -- Evening at room -- Wrote letter to Wakelee & co, on catheters -- Bed 1 --

Thursday March 8

Same - Evening attended regular semi monthly meeting of Dagree Lodge No 1, IOOF -- 4 took 1st and 3 the 2nd degrees -- Snowing lively when I came home -- Was down town short time -- Slept from 11 to 2 & wrote rest of night on letter to Garrard -- About 3 inches of snow fell --

Friday March 9

Variable, melting muddy -- Evening wrote letter to Chas B Gregory -- Bed at 1 -- Emperor William of Germany died at 8:30 AM -- 91 years old --

At Carson & Reno Frank Doven arrives My Comstock Statistical Contract

Saturday March 10

Clear & pleasant -- Morning train to Carson -- About town -- Avery $5 -- Took evening

Sunday March 11

More so -- Morning was at train & sent letter to Chas Rawson, Va -- Saw Frank Doten take the up train, having come in on the train from California -- He was delayed & just made out to catch the tail end of the train as it pulled out -- PM & evening down town awhile -- met lots of friends & acquaintences -- Bed 9

Monday March 12

Clear, warm, & pleasant -- Took morning train -- Laid over at Carson -- Met Frank Doten & we ran some together -- Was at the Mint & fixed up things with Garrard on the required Comstock statistics for the Treasury Department -- Bureau of the US Mint

Campobello Concert

I wrote up my proposal in the matter with charge put at $350.00 -- He forwarded it to Washington by evening mail -- I got to Va at 6:30 -- attended the "Campobello Grand Society Concert" at Pipers Opera House -- Very good company -- Mostly Italian Opera, lots of piano, some extra fiddling and rather of a slim huse -- Wrote a item or two for Enterprise -- Bed 2 --

Variable & cooler -- Bed 2 --

Wednesday March 14

Cloudy & cold -- several light snowsqualls made some mud -- I was about as usual -Bed 1 -- "Our American Cousin" this evening at Opera House --

Same -- as usual -- Evening I attended opening of Emmet Guard ball at Opera House -- Big affair -- Bed at 2 --

Saturday March 17

Same -- St Patrick's Day -- No particular observance -- Evening about town -- Met John J Harris of Gold Hill, a miner, & insured him for $2,000 -- Took him to my room & wrote out his applicaiton & he paid me $21 -- Bed at 2 -- This evening I attended regular meeting of my Lodge -- Five new members initiated -- Big and lively meeting -- I was called upon & made a good little speech -- Wrote & sent a letter to Hon J P Jones, Washington this PM -- for him to send me certain Pub Docs relative to the Comstock

A Comstock Variety Sketch Haverly's Minstrels

Sunday March 18

Clear & cooler but pleasant -- As usual -- Evening down town a short time -- Home & composed a seven page Comstock variety sketh for SM Blakely a brother-in-law of Dave & John Crosby grocers which he wishes to publish as his own in a weekly paper in his town, called the Bad Axe Democat published at Bad Axe, Michigan -- Bed at 4 -Monday March 19

Same -- Haverly's minstrel troupe arrived -- paraded the streets, & in evening had had very big house -- I was there -- Minstrel acrobatic, clog dancing, etc -- One of the most amusing as well as interesting entertainments I ever saw -- Copied my Comstock sketch -- 7 pages -- and delivered same to Crosby for SM Blakely --Bed at 1 --

Tuesday March 20

The same -- Rec'd short letter from Garrard saying telegram rec'd from Jas P Kimball, Director of the Mint, Washington D.C. saying "Last night I received the following telegram: Information proposed relative to Comstock not what is wanted, Have written." Evening was at Opera House & saw latter half of the Haverly performance -- Very good, & they had a good house, considering they gave a nmtinee today & this is the 2nd performance -- Bed at 2

Abbeys Uncle Tom's Cabin Company Fanny Robinson Dead

Wednesday March 21

Same -- About town as usual -- The Haverly's left and Abbey's Uncle Tom's Cabin troupe arrived -- Their big band of music paraded about 4 PM -- Fannie H Robinson of Gold Hill died this mornig, aged 26 -- She was one of the G.H. Public school teachers -- Worked herself to death -- not being constitutionally strong -- I telegraphed it to wife -- Evening attended theater -- Good House -- Play of Uncle Toms Cabin very well rendered, with assistance of the two Hyer sisters, colored - who are great in song, dance, etc -- They were here several years ago, when I saw them,
