cently -- Been drinking some, but did not seem drunk on this occasion -- Is said to have had cause for jealousy, as they have quarreled considerably of late --

Tip Clark's application -- "Old Lavender" Mrs Benny Jenkins dies

Monday Sept 2

Clear & 85[degrees] -- Morning train brought me Tip Clark's application examined by Dr Lee of Carson -- I looked through it carefully, saw it all right, & enclosed it in a letter to office below -- Took evening express train as far as Mound House, expecting to find Senator Jones on board en route for San F -- Didnt, so I returned on local from Mound House -- Went to Opera House -- Edward Harrigan and good company in "Old Lavender" -- Good big house -- Nearly 100 came in special train from Carson -- 2 coaches -- full -- Very good play -- Bed 1 -- Henry J ("Tip") Clark -- Benny Jenkins' wife died at 5:20 this PM --One bullet having penetrated the bladder was the immediate cause of death -- He is still in jail of course --

Reno -- Jones off -- Southworth Policy -- Rec'd J P Flanningham's Death

Tuesday Sept 3

Same, 90[degrees] -- Hot day -- About town -- Took evening train for Reno -- Senator Jones got aboard at Gold Hill, with Hamilton, Gosham & other relatives & friends for San F -- Got a small chance to talk with him before got to Reno -- Found all right there -- Bed 9 --

Same 85[degrees] -- 6 AM out at alarm of fire -- It was in the [claboose] Fire Dept to the rescue -- Returned on AM train to Va -- about town -- Evening wrote items for Enterprise -- Bed 1 -- Rec'd by mail today the $1,000 policy for Dr S Southworth

Thursday Sept 5

Same 90 -- Funerals of Mrs Jenkins and J P Flanningham this PM -- Both buried here -- He died in Gold Hill Tuesday of diarrhea and Typhoid fever -- Good man & friend -- Evening I got in a batch of items, entitled "Along the Railroad" -- read proof etc -- Bed 2

Friday Sept 6

Same -- 86[degrees] -- About town -- Bed 12 --

Saturday Sept 7

Same -- Went with excursion train to Carson & back -- Dined at French restaurant with Harry Johns and Biggerstaff -- About town some in Carson -- Evening wrote up picnic for Enterprise -- Read proof, etc -- Bed 3 --

Sunday Sept 8

Same -- PM I presided at regular monthly meeting of the Exempts -- Took evening train to Reno -- Found all right there, Mrs. Powell still attending to the housework -- Bed 9

Monday Sept 9

Clear -- 85 -- AM returned Va -- PM about town -- Met W P Bennett -- Took him to my room & delivered him his "Visionary Impressions" job -- Much pleased with it --

Tuesday Sept 10

Same -- As usual -- Evening at theater -- Karl Gardner, German comedian & singer with company in "Fatherland" -- 3 nights engagement -- good entertainment -- 1/2 a house -- Bed 12

Wednesday Sept 11

Same -- cooler -- 80[degrees] -- Morning train to Carson -- called on Dr Southworth & he paid me the $10 admission fee and $3 first annual dues on his insurance policy which I mailed to him last Sunday -- returned on regular passenger train, 1 hour & 20 minutes in Carson -- Got off at Gold Hill, & was about town an hour or so -- Walked to Va -- Evening in Enterprise office awhile, reading proofs etc -- Bed 1

Thursday Sept 12

Same -- PM rode to Gold Hill on 'bus -- about town called on Jane Noble at her room in the Fraser building -- Rode home with Bart Burke in his Buggy -- Evening at the theater & saw last act of "Karl the Peddler" -- with Chas A Gardner in the leading

Millie's Baby -- No Western mail -- cold wave RR Bridges Burned

role -- His third night, with 3 slim houses, this the poorest of all -- Don't amount to much, the whole crown -- Was at Enterprise awhile -- Bed 2 --Got postal

card from wife, this AM saying she had received a telegram from Ed that Millie had a baby on Monday, a daughter, She & baby doing well -- So I suppose I may be considered a step grandfather --

Friday Sept 13

Hazy & cooler -- 72[degrees] -- Evening still cooler -- Harris' cigar store thermometer getting down to 55[degrees] at 10 o'clock -- About town -- Evening at Enterprise -- Got in "Along the Railroad" notes, nearly a column & other items -- Bed 12:30 -- No western mail today -- Big bridge burned yesterday near Cascade on the CP -- ten miles east of Cisco, on the Sierra Nevada --

At Gold Hill -- No Mail Train Today Wife's Reno School Article -- Weigh 191 lbs -- Mail arrived -- Hay Fever

Saturday Sept 14

Same -- About 10 AM rode in bus to Gold Hill -- Visited Jack Long and Ed Swift, at lower end of town, also others -- raised no money -- Walked back about 4 PM -- No mail train today -- from Reno -- Rewrote an article from wife on the Reno public schools and State University -- Took it to Enterprise & will be in morning paper -- Bob Lindsaty to father it -- Read proof, etc, & waited will delayed mail train arrived from Reno at 1:45 AM -- Went down & got items -- Only Thursday's mail arrived & 10 passengers -- Those from Cal left Thursday -- Work actively commenced rebuilding the burned bridge -- No freight to be transferred across the chasm till bridge is complete for trains -- Wrote up the item, & bed at 3:20 Weighed at Folsom's store, Gold Hill today 191 pounds -- Feel my annual hay fever coming on

Same -- Slept till noon -- odd jobs at room, bath, mending, etc -- 3 PM went down town -- Mail arrived at 6:30 & turned & went back in 25 minutes -- Tip Clark's policy received -- Evening about town -- Bed 12 -- Letter with Clark's policy says Chatelain is declined --

Monday Sept 16

Same -- Morning I gave Tip Clark his policy -- Took train to Reno -- found all right -- PM about town -- Evening the Reno Guard out on drill -- Nearly 40 -- full uniform -- PM about town -- Reviewed by Brig Gen Booton -- Bed 10 -- Sammy commenced as messenger boyt for the W U Telegraph Co today -- $20 a month -- 14 years old in December next --

Tuesday Sept 17

Same -- AM at home -- PM & evening about town -- Evening, at 6, the first through passenger train across the repaired bridge, arrived, followed by 2nd section, 30

RR Blockade Raised -- Smoky -- At Carson Tip Clark Note -- Carson Butterflies

minutes later, and the third -- the regular business -- 40 minutes still later -- 12 carts -- Left SF at 6 PM yesterday -- 11 hours late -- Blockade raised & country sage -- Bed 10 --
