day & evening -- Nose plugged & eyes sore -- bed 12 -- Weighed today on Mallon's scales 190 pounds

Thursday Oct 3

Same as usual -- Evening Margaret Mather & good dramatic Co at Opera House -- Romeo & Juliet -- I forgot & wasn't there but she had good house, & all said she was a fine Juliet -- Bed 12 --

Friday Oct 4

Same -- Morning train to Reno -- All right -- PM took Bessie out to race track & grounds of State Fair on a 'bus -- sent her up on grand stand, while I slopped about looking at the races, gambling, drinking etc -- Great big crowd -- biggest Reno ever saw on such occasion -- Fully 5,000 people on the grounds -- I rode down

At State Fair FG Newland on Irrigation

in the local train, on which was quite a number but on the excursion train which followed at about 10 there was 521 from Va & GH -- Ten coaches -- 7 flats left Carson en route, carrying over 1,000 -- Evening I was at the Court House & heard address of Frank G Newlands, before State Agricultural Society, on irrigation, etc -- He is an aspirant for U.S. Senator, -- Pretty good address -- [1/2?] an audience -- Went to the Pavilion & saw the big showing of vegetable, [manufacturs?] etc -- Bed 12

Saturday Oct 5

Same -- About noon rode out to Fair grounds with Bob Lindsay & wife & my wife in thier carrigge - Saw ladies riding & racing tournament, they picking off rings with

poles, going around the track on mile dash, etc -- race between a man and a horse

Louis Hirschberg sold out Margaret Mather in Romeo & Juliet

40 yds & around a stake -- horse winner by a foot or so -- Indian pony race, mile dash, 29 entrees, & regular running & trotting races -- Very good attendence -- Rode in with Capt Joe White of Gold Hill on cart behind his black mule Jack, in gay style at 6 PM -- Evening took Bessie to Opera House -- Margaret Mather and her dramatic Co in Romeo & Juliet -- Densely crowded -- all that could get in -- Very good -- Bed at 12 --

Sunday Oct 6

PM cloudy & cooler -- Morning train to Va -- Louis Hirschberg of the Crystal, sold out to Con Ahern last Thursday -- Louis had the liquor stand privilege at the Fair, & made from $1,500 to $2,000 out of it -- PM about town -- Evening at Opera House -- Isabel Morris and dramatic Co in "Gwynne's Oath" -- Very poor house -- Bed at 1 --

Nose still bothered & eyes sore, but recovering from my annual hay fever --

Monday Oct 7

Stormy -- Took morning local train to Carson -- arr at 9 -- Cloudy, windy, threatening and fearfully dusty -- Bad day for commencement of the District Fair, which consequently didnt amount to much this day -- I was on business & took the regular passenger train back at 10:20 and arrived at Va at 11:45 -- PM about town -- rained

lightly most of the PM, laying dust well, & making little mud -- 1st rain since June 7 last -- I think -- Nose still plugged some, & eyes sore -- Evening cleared up fine -- at Enterprise -- Bed 1 -- The Isabel Morris Co played "The Great Divorce Case" to a very scarce audience -- A [Meekins] says Louis Hirschberg took in $1,460 on Friday & about $900 Saturday at the Reno fair bar --

Tuesday Oct 8

Cloudy & cold with occasional light snow storms, only enough to just whiten the ground a little -- About town -- Sent letter to AW Bishop Secy of Mutual Endowment Association, Oakland Cal asking for agency -- Evening wrote a humorous sketch for Enterprise about wind-up of State Fair, Cap Joe White's mule etc -- Took it to office at 10 but wont go in till Thursday morning -- as too crowded tonight -- Nellie McHenry & dramatic Co at Opera House tonight, in "Sweet Charitys Sake" a nice little variety play -- Said to be pretty good -- Very poor house -- Bed at 1 -- clear andfreezin g a little -- 1st snow of season -- Sierra mountains whitened --

Wednesday Oct 9

White frost -- Variable -- more pleasant -- Morning train to Carson on business -- returned on passenger train at 11:45 -- Evening train to Gold Hill -- went to Ed Swift's residence on life insurance -- Capt Kent another agent there -- walked back to Va -- About town -- Bed 1 -- cold & cloudy

Davidson Bros -- Street Gymnasts -- D H Pine Joe Douglass drunk again -- Carson Fair

Thursday Oct 10

Clear & cool -- Morning train to Carson & return on regular Passenger at 11:45 -- PM about town -- Two gymnasts, Davidson Bros, had a rope stretched across from Black's building to the old [Bauer] or Gillig Corner on C st, at Taylor -- 40 ft above street -- Did some very fine tight rope walking, etc, and collected what they could from the immence crowd of spectators -- Evening at Degree Lodge -- 7 candidates took 1st deg -- good audience -- I made good talk -- also others -- Bed 12:30 -- Old Joe Douglass got very drunk last evening, & been so all day also -- Been abstinent & sober for about a year --

Friday Oct 11

Morning White frost -- Same -- Fine day -- At Carson all day & attended Fair, races etc -- Took application of [Danl H. Pine] to be member of Society of Pacific Coast Pioneers -- also his $10 therefor -- Home on evening local train -- Bed 12 -- Good big attendance at the Fair from Reno, Va et al -- Best day --

Saturday Oct 12

Same -- At Carson Fair as yesterday -- Was at the Pavilion, & not at the gounds -- Good attendance -- PM met Frank Doten just in from Bodie from freighting trip -- Arrived at Va in time to attend Lodge -- Afterward went to Enteprise office & wrote "District Fair Wind-up" -- Read proof etc -- Bed 2:30 -

Cloudy -- PM about town -- By mail today I recd a package of supplies, etc, and a letter from L A Reiley, Genl Manager of the Mutual Endowment and Life Association --making me agent -- PM I presided at regular monthly meeting of the Exempts, as usual -- Bed at 11 --

Clear and pleasant -- Morning train to Carson -- Was about town -- Frank Doten getting loaded up & ready to leave for Bodie -- Took his $10 with applicationn to join the Pioneers Society -- Home to Va on evening train -- Bed at 12 --

Tuesday Oct 15

Same -- Went to Carson again the same -- Saw Frank Doten pull out for Bodie at noon -- 12 horses & 3 wagons with [ ] cargo 24,500 lbs -- Home on evening train -- Wrote up "Capital Notes" for Enterprise -- Saw Edison's phonograph at Appeal office -- & Sam Davis worked it for me -- Wonderful instrument -- Dave M Ryan married to Ceta Brophy today -- They held grand reception this PM & left for Cal on evening train -- Read proof at office & bed at 2 -- White frost mornings now -- Took Frank Doten's application to join Pioneers today --
