Happy New Year -- 1891 Zangerle proofs -- Bennett reminiscences -- New Year's dinner at Connerton's -- 1891

Variable weather -- sunshine and cloud -- thawy and muddy -- A.M. busy at room till noon -- By mail received B & M proof blanks from San F to give to C E Mack atty in Zangerle death case. W P Bennett of Gold Hill met me. We went to my room and I examined and corrected a lot of manuscript for him for the book on pioneer reminiscences he is getting up. Took a couple of hours and he paid me a couple of dollars. At 3 PM went to John Connerton's residence, corner of E & Washington sts, & dined with him & wife -- Turkey, etc, & pleasant social time for 3 hours. Evening, about town -- quiet for New Year -- Bed at 1. Clear & pretty cold.
Fred Clough, and Ft John reminiscences
Friday Jan 2
Same -- Busy at room most of day, tailoring, sewing and fixing up my daily costume, etc -- Evening down town -- Met John H Dennis, editor of the Chronicle, & we dined together at the City Bakery -- After that, we met Fred Clough who was born at Fort John, Amados County, Cal, after Dennis & I left there. His father, Orson Clough kept the store where I was taken at the time I got caved on and so nearly killed at Ft John in 1854 -- We had a long and very interesting chat together about those old times -- Clough is an engineer at the Alta -- His father is still living, in the

Ft John section. We three the only Ft Johners in this vicinity that we know of -- Bed at 1 --

Clear & pleasant -- AM busy at room at odd jobs -- PM about town -- Gave the Zangerle proof blanks to C E Mack, atty for the estate. Evening about town awhile -- Bed at 1

The same. Busy at room most of day, reading writing and fixing up things -- Jim Jewell fell dead on C street about noon, from hemorrhage of the lungs -- Evening about town -- Bed 1 --
Monday Jan 5
Clear & cold -- freezing all day in shade -- Morning cloudy with light 1/2 inch snowstorm before daylight -- PM rode to Gold Hill on bus, was Crown Point office, etc -- walked back -- went to room & wrote letter to J P Jones, Washington, D.C. about my Marshalship -- Sent it off by evening mail -- The mail did not get in till about 6:40 PM & left in 20 minutes after, the local train coming in as it left -- A locomotive off the track near Blue Canyon was the cause -- Evening about town -- Bed 1 --

meeting of the Exempts -- caalled to attend funeral of Jim Jewell -- Only 8 present out of the 37 of us left -- concluded, not to turnout as a body, & detailed 2 pall bearers -- Light funeral -- 5 carriages -- About 50 Odd Fellows, Chosen Friends, Miners Union, Exempts etc on foot -- Bad day for funeral excursions -- Evening about town -- at room wrote up or fixed up sketch for W P Bennett "Downie of Downieville" -- Bed 2 --

Wednesday Jan 7
Cloudy & cold, with a few sprinkles of snow occasionally about town in PM -- Evening at N G Hall, to Dr Clark's specialty entertainment -- a medical lecture with song, dance, dog show etc as attractions -- Paid 15 cts admission to seats -- standing room free -- Advertised to run for two weeks commencing last Monday -- Full houses -- Bed at 1 -- Very cold --

Same -- About town -- Mailed tonight letters to Geo B Van Emon, and W R McFadden assemblymen from Lincoln County, Pioche, notifying them I am candidate for Sergeant-at-arms of Assembly -- Evening about town -- Bed 1 -- 20 above z -- There has been pretty fair sleighing on C at the last 2 or 3 days -- best I ever saw on so little snow, but the weather has been cold and the ground frozen hard, with very little thaw -- letter from wife enclosing one from (Rozzie), brother Sam and

to get in as Engrossing Clerk of the Senate -- Worked best I knew how on it -- Big crowd of legislators present in town & more coming -- lots of buzzing & caucusing -- Home on evening train -- Bed 1
