The Killing at Laigneau's -- Wintry
Friday April 1, 1892
Cold and variable, with considerable snow squalls -- Wintry day -- April fool day" -- PM about town -- Bed 12 clear & freezing -- About 8 oclock last eveing, August Bouheben, brother-in-law of A Laigneau the coffee dealer on South C street was fatally shot by Jerry Barry, a mine in the Yellow Jacket mine -- It was at Laigneau's store in a dispute or discussion about money matters, between Barry & Laigneau. Barry drew a pistol and Bouheben in trying to prevent his shooting Laigneau by wrestling with him for the pistol got shot in the head, from which he died this PM. Barry ran home to Gold Hill, but subsequently came back to Va and gave himself up by advice of his wife -- Barry was somewhat under the influence of liquor. Both were young men --

Saturday April 2
Same -- snowing, muddy & disagreeable -- PM wrote a letter or two for Bennett & he paid me $1 -- The Georgia Minstrels (colored) arrived on noon train and had band parade on C at sidewalk -- Evening gave performance at Opera House -- Very good indeed -- Good house -- Bed at 1 -- clear & freezing --

Same -- PM dined at Connerton's -- Bed at 12 -- snow squally and cold -- PM I wrote three letters for Bennett -- Received a nice one from my son Alf, Reno, today --
Monday April 4
Variable & cold -- Was about town as usual -- Bed 12 -- At the Enterprise office I found a copy of Sunday's Reno Journal, with a column & a half communication in it from my wife, entitled "Two Pictures - Woman in the Dance House, and Woman in the Salvation Army"
Bennett $1 -- Jose Salinas
Tuesday April 5
Clear warm & tolerably Springlike -- PM wrote couple of letters for Bennett & he paid me $1. My old Chileno friend Jose Salinas got very badly used last evening -- Nearly killed on the street, going home, by some scoundrel. He was found by Bob Gracey and Bill Sutherland who informed the police & he was taken to the Court House where he was properly cared for, surgically & otherwise, and about noon today taken to the County Hospital -- Evening about town -- Bed 12 -- Jose sent word to me this PM from the Hospital that he would like to see me. I am his special friend with whom he always talks Spanish. He is a natie of Chile, Valparaiso, about 65 yrs old & I have known him here about 25 yrs.

Variable -- About as usual -- Bed at 12 --

Thursday April 7
Clear & pleasant -- PM I footed it over to the County Hospital, via Washington st, etc, about 2 miles and had interview of an hour or so with Jose Salinas, who had sent for me by various parties -- Most he wanted was to talk Spanish he being a very poor English talker -- He is rapidly recovering, though not able to be out of bed yet -- Looks as though he had been having a lively [fiztic?] discussion with John L. Sullivan -- On way back I visited [lieber Holneau's?] residence on Washington st & had pleasant chat with him & wife -- Evening about town a little -- Bed 12 --
Friday April 8
Same -- Bed 12 -- Considerably lame & stiff from my walk yesterday to Hospital & back -- About 2 miles to Hospital & 3 miles back -- Any how the round trip is about 3 miles --
Saturday April 9
Clear & rather windy & dusty -- PM I attended funeral of Wm Tickell from I.O.O.F. hall -- Evening at Enterprise awhile, reading proof etc -- Bed 2 --
At Lodge -- Stormy -- Swelled legs "Wanted; the Earth" -- About an inch snow in morning

Clear & pleasant -- Passed as usual -- PM attended the regular monthly meeting of the Exempts -- Bed at 12 --
Monday April 11
Cloudy, cold windy & dusty -- PM about town -- Evening at meeting of my Lodge,

Virginia No 3 I.O.O.F. -- Good attendance -- Hadn't been there for several months -- It was very sleety, snowy & a little rainy when I came out -- Bed at 1 -- same. Legs, both right & left badly swollen from knees to ankles last day or 2, or since my hospital walk -- Of a dropsical nature -- Dont [adnore?] the symptoms -- Had it more or less for a year or more --
Tuesday April 12
Cold & variable -- PM, funeral of Jake Nicholls -- I was in attendance, etc -- Evening at the Opera House -- John [Dillon?] & Company in: "Wanted, the Earth" -- Good house but poor play and consequently poor entertainment. Poorest for its pretensions I think I ever saw. All right however -- Bed at 1 --

Same, PM, wrote a letter for Bennett -- Evening about town-- Bed at 12 -- Wrote & sent a 2 page letter by evening mail to Fred W Clough, Three Rivers, Tulare Co, Cal.

Very blustery disagreeable dusty day -- Cloudy & threatening -- Big Washoe Zephyrs -- Bed at 12:45 --

Clear & cold & very blustering -- Bed at 12 -- Clear & the wind blowing like fury --

so to speak -- and no dust left blow away -- Blown harder & more of it the last three or four days than I ever saw in my life, anywhere, Wherefore is it? I attended the funeral services of "Cul" Hall at Methodist church this PM. Large attendance. The remains were sent to Oakland Cal this evening, for interment* --

Same -- Very boisterous weather -- Toward evening light snow squalls -- Bed 12 -- Snowing & country white with snow. Republican primaries today for delegates to the State Convention April 30
Sunday April 17
Cold & stormy -- PM & evening occasional hail and snow squalls -- Easter Sunday -- The Knights Templar turned out in full uniform, on foot, at 11AM -- 23 in number, and marched from their hall on B st, via Sutton Avenue & C st & Taylor st to St Pauls -- Episcopal Church, where they attended service, as they do annually -- And they marched back again, of course -- I was about town as usual -- Bed 12 -- clear
