Plymouth and which has travelled California and Nevada with me ever since. Bessie has been playing it during the last year or so -- since she commenced -- but now I have swapped with her, letting her have the old Doten fiddle of my sire --

Same -- cooler -- About town as usual -- Bed 1 --

Clear -- cooler -- high, boisterous winds from S & W -- dustry & disagreeable -- About town -- Evening at room writing up my Reno trip-- Bed 12 --

Thursday June 2

Same but a little more pleasant -- PM I finished up writing my Reno trip "Outside Observations" and staid with it on Enterprise this evening, read proof etc & bed at 3 -- Evening & night cold -- almost or quite freezing.

Friday June 3

Clear cool & pleasant -- Many people say it was frosty last night -- About town as usual -- Bed at 12 -- cold

Same -- About town -- nothing new -- Bed 12

Wintry weather -- A Nicholls Rep National Convention -- Frosty

Wednesday June 8

Variable & cold -- (Salom) stoves fired up last evening & all about town. Several snow squalls this AM -- Only stirring news is Rep National Convention at Minneapolis, commencing yesterday -- Only got as far as McKinley for Permanent chairman, & adjourned till 11 AM tomorrow -- Bowels bothered me badly yesterday & today -- Rept me washing etc -- Bed at 11 -- Very Wintry for June --

Thursday June 9

Same -- 1 or 2 very light snow squalls -- Colder than yesterday -- Thermometer 40 degrees to 45 degrees -- The dispatches from Minneapolis the excitement of the day -- The convention wrangled till way past midnight over report of committee, on Credentials -- 2 hours difference in time between there & here -- Bed at 11 -- Wrote & mailed 4 page letter to A Nicholls, Los Angeles, about Centennial -- Frost this morning & past 2 mornings --

Harrison and Reid Nominated -- Convention adjourned -- Snow -- Wintry -- University Student the Comstock

Same -- Frosty morning -- Several light snow squalls during the day -- Wintry cold -- Harrison was nominated on first ballot this PM: Harrison, 565; McKinley, 183;

Blaine, 175; Reed, 4; Lincoln 1. Whitelaw Reid was nominated for Vice President -- Convention adjourned, sine die at 9:57 PM. I was about town most of the day & evening -- Bed at 12 -- cold, freezing night -- Snowing a little when I went to bed --

Saturday June 11

Same -- a little warmer -- 1 or 2 light sprinkles of rain or snow -- About 10:30 AM a bus arrived from Reno with 15 young ladies and gents, students of the State University on a visit to the Comstock -- they dined at the International and in the PM visited the C & C shaft & down into the mine -- some of them -- They returned to Reno, over the grade about 6 PM -- The morning train -- about 11:20 brought a special Pullman car attached, loaded with about 60 men, women & children

Knights of Pythias Visit From Truckee With Infant Drum Corps

from Truckee, consisting of Knights of Pythias, wives, etc, and infant drum corps of 12 little girls -- They attended the Grand Lodge of K of P at Carson yesterday, and rolled up here to see the Comstock people & brethren -- They marched up from the depot to the International, the drum corps at the head -- dined, rested and cruised about town seeing the sights etc -- visiting the Chollar works, mill and mine etc & at 5:20 PM left on return to Truckee, very well pleased -- The drum corps of 12 little girls neatly uniformed was finest feature visiting us ever, in that line -- Only been drilled a month, and only play "taps," but, didn't miss a tap or evolution in drill -- At leaving they marched up street couple of blocks &

them off with hearty cheers -- Among the Knights, all of whom were in full uniform I met for the first time with C F McGlashan, of the Truckee Republican, Mr Mayers, who helped build my house in Gold Hill, Mr Schaefer, Truckee lumber dealer, Mr Dolan et al -- Evening about town -- Bed 2 --

Variable -- Toward evening a steady copious rain set in for some hours -- PM I attended regular monthly meeting of the old Exempts -- Was about town in the evening -- Bed 12 -- rained etc about all night --

Monday June 13

Stormy -- More or less rain during the day -- Morning old Mt Davidson was well white with snow -- I was about town as usual -- Bed at 1 -- Extraordinary June weather --

Tuesday June 14

Variable, with a few light showers -- Muddy streets dried up considerably. Rec'd box by express from wife, enclosing supply of clean collars, also 2 dozen photos from Sammy, of myself and the rest of us including Charley & wife, taken when he was there last at home. Very good indeed -- I gave three to Prof Zimmer -- myself sitting, with and without hat on, and I, Bessie & Sam in musical group, with

Variable, but inclined toward warm & pleasant -- As usual -- Bed 12 -- It was June 13, 1888 that I was at J C Caldwell's house, on Gold Canyon, just about the Devil's Gate and saw his little imbecile, crippled daughter Bessie, of whom the annexed clip from the Enterprise relates. Henry Coller, arrested Sunday morning and now in jail on charge of rape upon her, I never saw -- Her father tells me she is five or six months gone in pregnancy. A very beastly damnable case.

Thursday June 16

Same -- AM wrote letter to Cyrus Coleman of Markleville, Alpine Co, California for Bob Patterson, also a 3 big page letter to son Sammy, Reno. -- Bed at 1 -- McGurn's stage, coming in from Reno got tumbled over the Geiger Grade this side of the toll house, by old Jones the rancher from Truckee Valley trying to pass it on the upper

Judge Whiteker a passenger got his head badly cut and a boy got arm broke -- Stage badly demoralized but no very extensive or serious damage, merely the whole top portion being totally destroyed leaving the running gear all right, though the coach rolled over three or four times -- The driver got bruised, cut and strained some, but came out all right.
