even get out to meals or lunch -- Boiled & ate 4 eggs and a cracker at room in Room 7. Got down on street at 6:30 -- about town awhile and at room reading etc -- Bed in Room 5 at 1 o'clock -- very tired from my hard day's work --

Thursday May 31

Cloudy but very pleasant -- Worked hard at finish of removal and fixing up -- Nothing new about town -- The Jim Rule 6 months contract ends with this day. Has not found even low grade ore -- A dead failure -- Bed 11 -- Very tired --

1894 -- My Moving Completed -- No Street Sprinkling Pease of Faribault

Friday June 1, 1894

Variable -- AM cloudy, windy & very dusty -- PM moderate, clear & pleasant -- The authorities say can't afford to sprinkle the streets, and may probably have to get along without all the season. I got my traps all stowed away in my new room and everything fixed up right at 2 PM -- was about town, etc, and bed at 12 -- Workmen began clearing up the suite of rooms vacated --

Monday June 4

Cloudy & cool -- Bed 12 -- Wrote quite a long letter to Mr Pease, Banker, Faribault Minnesota, brother to my deceased friend G W Pease -- did not finish it in time for evening mail --

Snow -- Rain & Hail -- Wife -- Centennial Assessed one cent No 47 Big Hail storm -- Pease of Faribault -- with sagebrush

Tuesday June 5

Stormy -- A snowstorm in early morning whitened the tops of the mountains -- several light rains during the day -- About 6 PM a heavy hail storm with thunder & lightning piled up about 2 inches -- Evening very light rain occasionally -- This PM W S James, Secy of the Centennial called on me at my room and we levied an assessment -- No 47 -- of one cent per share on Centennial -- Evening I put it in Enterprise and wrote a good local on the subject -- Bed 1 -- Got letter from Kinzle -- says Nicholls will arrive at Nevada City tomorrow on way to Centennial to start up gravel washing -- Wrote K a short letter, a 4 page one to wife, and finished & mailed that one to Pease. With this letter, I sent 2 copies of Va Chronicle containing item & an Enterprise with item: "An old Comstocker's Heart" -- In these papers I inclosed a bunch of freshly picked sagebrush.

1894 -- Good Rain -- The Vacated Rooms Rusuming Work at the Centennial

Same -- Several smart rains especially in the PM when it poured down good

for two or three hours -- Bed 12 -- starlight -- Workmen have been busy cleaning up the suite of rooms vacated by myself & 2 neighbors, since we left Friday, All carpets taken up, rooms thoroughly cleansed & whitened, etc --

Thursday June 7

Variable cool & pleasant -- Bed 12 -- Letter recd from Kinzle, Nevada City, dated yesterday, says Nicholls fromLos Angeles arrived that day, & he & Richards would go up to the Centennial mine today, the idea being to commence gravel sluicing operations as soon as possible --

Friday June 8

Clear, cool & pleasant -- Bed 11:30 --

Herting-Cocks tragedy -- 1894

Saturday June 9

Same -- rather dusty -- Only bad incident was the shooting of Wm Cocks on C st front of Wells Fargo & Cos old office by Ernest Herting -- at 11:30. It came out of an attempt to collect a bill from Cox, who was somewhat drunk, It was in the Arcade saloon it commenced by Cocks striking H -- Both were put out, and resumed the trouble on the street -- H fired 2 shots from navy revolver, one taking effect in left cheek of Cocks ranging downward and out. The other shot did not hit him -- Quite an excitement -- Cocks is about 22 yrs old, and H over 60 -- Bed 1 -- He fell in middle of the street, & was taken to rooms of the National Guard

Sunday June 10

Wintry -- AM clear & cold -- PM Cloudy with hail & snow whitening the ground -- Cocks is liable to recover -- Herting was captured at his home in Seven-mile Canyon north of town early this morning & taken to jail -- He resisted, firing 3 or 4 shots without hitting anybody -- Bed 12 -- Freezing & threatening --

Monday June 11

Variable -- Cloudy & cold with light snowstorms in the PM -- Wintry -- Bed 12 --

Tuesday June 12

Cloudy, cold, variable -- The street sprinkling cart started for first time this season -- the Water Co having made reduction in charge for water -- Bed at 1 -- Masonic Grand Lodge last 2 days brought Masons from all parts of the state -- got through tomorrow --

Same -- Met John H Dennis this AM who came from Reno to attend the Masonic Grand Lodge -- Saw him off on evening train, also Joe Miller & wife -- Bed 12

Same -- Bed 12 -- Got letter from M Freeman -- 967 Eucid st, St Paul Minnesota, asking all about Centennial -- Sent him a 3 page reply, also sent a letter to wife --

Same -- Young Cox, or Cocks died at 2 AM -- I sent a letter to J A Miller, Austin by evening mail -- Bed at 1 --

Cloudy with several light showers -- Bed 12 -- Battle of Bunker Hill -- no observance --

Monday June 18

Same -- PM more clear & pleasant -- Annual session of the I.O.O.F. Grand Lodge -- The Encampment today and G Lodge tomorrow -- Many Odd Fellows from outside, & more will come tomorrow -- Funeral of Cocks this PM
