would have been re-elected -- He attended the big Silver rally at Piper's Opera House Saturday evening, walked home over the Divide in the snow and rain, feeling first rate -- But his clothes were wet and he went to bed chilled. Lived alone -- nobody to care for him properly -- Pneumonia got him, neighbors and Dr Manson got onto his case Sunday PM & evening & did their best to thaw him into renewed existence but he died serenely -- poor & no relatives, but lots of friends -- Good bye old boy. Evening with Evans -- Bed 1 -- clear & cold --

Clear, warm & very pleasant -- Sent five page letter to wife -- 45 years ago today I landed in San Francisco -- Evening with Evans -- Bed 12 --

Same -- AM I wrote or re-wrote for Professor L Zimmer an improvement on an item I published in the Enterprise April 12, 1892, entitled "Zimmer's Musical Ear" -- Evening with Evans -- Bed 12 --

Same -- Miners Union Picnic at Sisters Hospital grounds, lower part of town -- Big time, music, games, dancing etc -- Busses running all the PM from town & from Gold Hill -- I wrote a letter for Jose Salinas to Alfred Dolge & Son, New York, about some wood received yesterday, (Spruce), for Violin manufacture -- Unusable stuff -- No good whatever -- Evening at room mostly -- Bed 12 -- cold --

Same -- cooler 55° -- About room AM -- down town PM -- Evening with Evans -- Bed 12 -- My annual hay fever is passing off lightly -- Eyes somewhat sore and nose plugged some.

Oliver Wendall Holmes Dead -- 1894 Miners put to work for election purposes "Yom Kippur" -- Seth Dead

Same -- About town -- Evening with Evans -- Bed 12 -- Many men being put to work in the mines of Gold Hill, also in the middle mines, for election purposes; they will all be discharged after election.

Same -- Bed 12 -- "Yom Kippur" was duly observed today by the Hebrew residents of the Comstock -- Their places of business were closed.

Same -- Letter from wife inclosing one from Bessie. She says Seth died Oct 4 at 6:30 PM quietly -- Dropsy, old age, etc -- Evening Evans -- Bed 12 --

1894 -- Evens sale to Paynter -- Stocks Booming

Friday Oct 12

Same -- 8 AM on deck -- Found George R Paynter editor of the Enterprise at the office -- We went to the room of Evans and he, Evans completed sale to Paynter of right to make & use his amalgam compound sluice riffle, and grizzly -- for $30 - $15 cash and rest on note at 30 days -- I fixed up all the writings -- Evening mostly at room -- Bed 12 --

Saturday Oct 13

Same -- Been a pretty fair stock boom last week or two -- Con Va got up to about $7 week ago -- Receded since to $5 today -- Mine full of big promise -- 1650 & 1700 levels -- Nothing new in any of the other mines, yet of course all sympathize -- PM I filled & paid following order for Evans, at Cole's

Evans Drugged -- Big Silver party Boom Rally 1894

drug store -- 3 1/2 oz glycerine, .25 1 oz (tinct cantharides, .25 4 oz alcohol, .25 1 oz permanganate potass, .25 2 oz boracic acid CP, .50 1 vial cantharides pellets, .25 1 vial belladonna pellets, .25 [Total] $2.00

Evening with Evans short time, then to Opera House -- Big blow out of Silver party -- Procession with band of music -- Artillery Band transparencies -- Young mens Silver club etc -- bonfires, etc -- jammed house -- Powning & Bergstein spoke 1 hour each -- spoke well -- Cutting, candidate for State Supt of Pub Instruction closed with a short, sick speech -- Band played and the Glee Club of 7 in uniform, sang lots -- good meeting, but little enthusiasm -- After the show was over, the Sharon ran the Whisky shops

1894 -- Silver Party Rally Exempts & Charley Wilson Hay Fever Ended

with the boys for awhile -- The Crystal beneath my room ran with a jolly crowd, singing etc rest of night -- Was there awhile myself -- Bed at 3 --

Same -- PM regular monthly meeting of the Exempts -- Charley Wilson from Carson present -- to be President of the Va Fire Dept -- By courtesy invitation he took the chair & presided on this occasion and we gave a nice little lunch, beer, etc, in his honor -- Nice time -- Evening Evans, Bed 12 --

I think I am through with the hay fever -- nose clear, eyes a little sore and not much cough -- Has bit me light this time, for all of which I am truly thankful.

Clear warm & pleasant -- Busy at room nearly all day writing a 2 page letter to wife and a 4 page letter to Eunice -- Evening short time with Evans -- room -- Bed 12 -- My letter to Eunice was of brotherly condolence -- and one of the best & most carefully composed I ever wrote --

Cloudy and a few light showers in the PM and evening -- streets muddy -- Evening Jose Salinas brought to my room Louis Grob, husband of Ella Sharp, and we had mutual banjo music and family conversation -- Afterward was with Evans awhile -- Bed 1 -- clear and cold --
