by the young Ladies' Institute at National Guard Hall tonight was a grand success in every respect.

Variable & cold, much of the snow from last Tuesday still remaining in shaded places -- Bed 12 -- PM was with Prof. Thos Cara awhile, and we visited St Paul's (Episcopal) church, where he officiates as organist & he showed me all about the organ, which is one of the finest on the coast --

Clear & cold -- letter to wife -- Bed 11 -- clear sharp cold and freezing hard --

Variable & cold -- Rec'd letter from J P Jones, Santa Monica - Wrote a reply but was too late for mail - Evening about town -- Bed 3 -- cloudy and threatening a storm -- Two shocks of earthquake, one quite heavy, between 2 & 6 o'clock this morning -- I did not feel them, only heard of them --

Monday Dec 3

Clear & cold -- Ice in the gutters didn't melt -- Rewrote and sent my letter to J P Jones, Santa Monica -- Evening about town -- Bed 12 --

Wife -- Bessie -- Earthquakes -- 1894 First Storm of Winter -- Big Snow

Tuesday Dec 4

Cloudy, cold and variable -- letter from wife & one from Bessie, the first since she has been in California -- Bed 11 -- tolerably smart earthquake at 9:30 & one lighter later on --

Wednesday Dec 5

Stormy -- Wintry -- Snow started in with light SW wind at early hour this morning and continued moderately most of day -- not cold -- Streets very muddy -- Toward evening storm broke and at midnight when I went to bed clear and moderately freezing. About 2 or 3 inches of snow accumulated today but it melted off nearly as fast as it fell -- no chance for sleighing -- First really tangible storm for the Winter --

Thursday Dec 6

Storming -- Snowstorm all day -- not cold -- piled up 8 inches or more -- Bed 12 -- still snowing quietly --

1894 -- Big Snow -- Wife Kinzle -- Winter "A Chapter on Organs" -- Mail Delayed by Snowdrifts

Friday Dec 7

Variable with a little more snow & some sunshine, etc -- moderate -- Over a foot of snow on a level -- Splendid sleighing through to Silver City -- PM and evening wrote 4 page letter to wife and 2 page to Kinzle -- Bed 12 --

Variable -- Morning a little more snow at times -- Everything on runners --

Sent off my letters to wife and Kinzle -- Bed 12 -- Variable & hard freezing -- Wrote "A Chapter on Organs" this evening for the Enterprise.

Very stormy -- Blew and snowed furiously all day -- Snow about 2 ft deep now -- Mail train did not arrive till 3:30 PM -- about 4 hours late, by reason of snowdrifts between Washoe Valley and here -- came in with double heads -- PM attended regular monthly meeting of the Exempts --

Exempts Election of Officers -- 1894 James McKay Suicides -- 5 Page letter to Bessie

8 present -- over 25 percent -- 29 members in all -- nominated and elected officers for ensuing 6 month term -- President, C M Brown; Vice Pres't, C C Bowman; Secretary, F D Plunkett; Treasurer, L Guggenheim; Trustees, Wm Pennison, Bart Burke and Alf Doten -- installation at next meeting a month hence -- Evening wrote a big five page letter to Bessie -- Bed at 1 -- Weather moderated but still threatening -- About 2 PM James R McKay, living with wife & 3 children near the Ophir works committed suicide -- About 44 yrs old -- native of Nova Scotia -- working steadily in the Ophir mine -- sober industrious good citizen -- Had spat with wife on religious matters, probably as they have had before, she being Irish Catholic and he Protestant -- Anyhow he went up and around into the wood cellar under

Morning light snowstorms -- PM variable -- Moderate -- Bed 12 -- Received a copy of the Boston Daily Globe of December 3 today containing a double column article on Plymouth Odd Fellows celebrating the 50th anniversary of Mayflower Lodge, of which brother Sam is the only surviving charter member -- A cut of the Hall building is given and also a very good picture of brother Sam -- Mayflower Lodge was instituted Dec 3, 1844, with 4 charter members, including Sam --

Letter to wife -- Change in train time 1894 -- Cal Press Ass'n Visit

Wednesday Dec 12

Clear & pleasant & cold -- PM wrote & sent 4 page letter to wife -- Coldest day and night of the season -- Bed 12 -- Sent wife also a 4 page letter last evening -- Train since 1st of the month been leaving at 5:10 instead of 5:20 as heretofore. Cal Press Association unexpectedly visited us today -- I met several of them -- Most of them from around the Bay & some never in snow country before. Had lots of sleighriding coasting, etc & visiting

mones, etc -- Some of the women, were especially exhilarated coasting down Union st from C -- one young woman having more fun than anybody at it -- This crowd seemed to enjoy their visit to the Comstock, better than any I have seen.

Cloudy variable -- Bed 12 -- Harry Gallway, Deputy County Clerk elect, got his left arm broken below the shoulder last evening while coasting on Carson st -- collision with another sled -- Face also bruised somewhat, but otherwise not badly hurt -- Rec'd letter today from J C Dawson, 1326 4th Avenue Altoona, Pa, desiring a copy of the Gold Hill News of Friday evening, March 31, 1882 -- The news died April 8, 1882, eight days after this date -- I replied this evening's mail to that effect & that couldn't find copy for him --
