$6 for 1 year subscription to Journal -- to collect and keep -- did so -- Bed at 12 -- About 9 AM I was reading paper at Dempsey's with feet on fender of stove. Had just left my chair to go out, when a big 45 caliber bullet crashed through the lathed and double plastered partition from the drug store adjoining and lodged in the opposite wainscoting. A line drawn from one place to the other showed that if I had kept my seat, I would infallibly have got the ball right in the neck or under the ear. It was a very narrow escape indeed -- And it was the same old story of a boy examing a gun and finding it was loaded -- When some of the parties in the saloon went in drug store and asked about it -- he smilingly assured them there was no harm done -- only a bottle of paregoric, etc, smashed, and the hole in the wall was nothing.
