graduates from this Carson institute only 6 have fallen from grace -- gone back on it. Sheriff Kinney sold 14 head of horses, mares, & colts at Public auction today for $26.25 from the public pound -- My letter of Saturday got into this morning's Journal --

Cloudy and sultry -- 90° -- AM wrote & sent letter to George Pyne, atty at Law, Va City about Kate Welch and Nellie Manning and one to Dan J Hanifan about Centennial. PM wrote & sent 2 page letter to J A Miller, Austin, and a letter to Journal -- Bed 11 --

Saturday Aug 3

Clear & hottest day of the season -- 98° -- 92 was the hottest heretofore, so says the official Weather Observer, C W Friend, here in Carson. Rec'd

letter from wife & replied to it. "Bob Graves" -- R N Graves, the old time Supt of Imperial & Comstock mining man generally, arrived here from San F on Business this AM. I met him -- hadn't seen him for 15 yrs or more. Bed 12 --

Same -- 86° -- Bed 12 -- By mail today I received from wife a neat little book of 363 pages entitled "The Story of the Pilgrims" by Morton Dexter -- It was sent to me by Cornelia as a birthday present --

Same -- Hottest yet -- 98 1/2° -- Bed 12 -- Everybody said this was the hottest day & the hottest night ever in Carson -- "Wildcat Joe's Visit"

Clear & a little cooler -- 90° -- Rec'd $10 from Journal -- Met S R McKeehan, a brother-in-law of Wm J Pickler -- He is from Kirkville, Missouri, where Pickler's mother lives -- came yesterday -- to examine into Pickler's affairs, etc. He left on his return home this evening. I sent a copy of the Journal and of the Carson Appeal about Pickler to his mother this evening -- Mrs Emily Crow, Kirkville, Mo -- wrote & mailed short letter this evening to Oscar T Shuck, San F -- Bed 12 -- Since receiving -- "The Story of the Pilgrims" I have read it all through -- much interested -- With

Same -- Letter from O T Shuck & from Dan Hanifan, & from Joe Miller, Austin returning the 300 shares -- sent letter to Kinzle -- At train this evening I met L W Getchell from at* 2 days visit to Va returning to Seattle where his family is -- Bed 12 -- Also sent note to Journal with Supreme Court decision on military armories rent -- I wrote long four page letter

Same -- 90° -- Took my Hanifan letter to the train & forgot to mail it and brought it home in my pocket -- then I put in the Post office for tomorrow -- Senator Jones came down on the evening train, from Gold Hill, bound for San F -- He stopped off for the night at the Arlington hotel -- I met him short time -- Sent letter to Journal by evening train -- Bed 12 --

Same -- 90° -- Frank M Pixley, the noted San Francisco Argonaut editor, politician and writer died at San F evening before last -- Good all around American -- Bed 12 --

Thursday Aug 15

Same -- 86° -- The US Grand Jury was drawn today in open court -- US Dist which will have the Mint cases of James Heney and Johnny T Jones for alleged stealage or embezzlement of Mint bullion, creating the shortage of $77,000 -- George Metzger left this evening for Butte, Montana -- Evening

I completed my 6 page "Wildcat Joe" letter to sister Lizzie, Waverly House, Charlestown, Massachusetts -- Bed at 12 -- Sent short letter to Journal this PM with list of Grand Jury -- Received a letter this evening at Post office, from Dan J Hanifan, Virginia City, Aug 14, acknowledging receipt of the 493 shares recovered Centennial stock which I mailed to him last Sunday --

Same -- Rec'd letter from Shuck inclosing $5 and 50 cts in 2 ct stamps -- letter from wife -- Bessie left for Cal Wednesday evening as her school opens next Monday -- I sent letters to Shuck, wife, Billy Flaherty and Lizzie's "Wildcat Joe" letter -- Bed 12 --

Same -- 90° -- Received a letter from Mrs Emily Pickler Crow, Kirksville, Missouri, mother to Wm A Pickler of the Carson Mint rascality -- Acknowledge receipt of my letter & papers, etc -- Kind old motherly letter, thankful for my favor to him & her, etc -- Bed 12 -- Met Mrs McLeod at train this evening, from Va, bound for Grass Valley, Cal. Her son, William McLeod, well known on the Comstock as "Fatty" McLeod, leg broken in Merrimac mine Grass Valley likely to die from blood poisoning and amputation just
