of Virginia, where it is strongest in the State -- Therefore a celebration is on in both places, in rivalry of each other, and Gold Hill will have the best of it, as all the Miners Unions, Virginia, Gold Hill & Silver City will combine there in fullest force, assisted by the Catholic church -- Has not been a separate 4th of July celebration since nearly 20 years ago, when I was President of the Day -- Carson and Reno do not make special celebration tomorrow -- but all go to the Comstock -- Excursion rate from either place $1, for the round trip --

Saturday July 4
Same -- AM clear, PM cloudy -- Went to Gold Hill on the morning excursion train -- Big crowd from Reno & Carson -- I got off at Gold Hill at quarter to 12, in good time to see the procession -- The old town profusely decorated in the good old time style -- But the News office wasn't -- I passed down from the depot shaking lots of hands on my way to the News office -- The front iron doors were thrown open, showing the empty ruined inside -- Streets lined with people -- women & children in gayest holiday attire, etc -- Soon the big procession came marching down from the Divide -- I stood on the sidewalk platform in front of News office, same old notebook in hand, taking notes after old time style and received many shouts and cheers of recognition from my passing friends -- It was a really fine,

large procession and celebration -- and everybody understood the incentive of it -- After it passed, I passed through the old News office, feeling like "Byron's rooster" -- After procession everybody enjoyed what they

could find to enjoy -- I found lots of good companionship, good eating and good drinking everywhere -- lots of free tables, freely spread & bountifully supplied in Miners Union Hall, the engine houses and other places about town -- and everybody ate, drank and made merry as possible -- At 2 PM I quietly folded my Arab tent and silently stole away from the festive scene, footing it up over the Divide to Virginia, arriving just in time to see the grand "Bicycle Parade" pass down C st from the Divide -- Only 25 or 30 decorated wheels and riders -- all over in five minutes -- City finely decorated, as usual on the occasion, but not much of a celebration there, as compared with old times -- all in Gold Hill -- I clip full account from the Virgnia Evening Chronicle -- I visited everywhere & shook everybody's hand -- dined with Mike Conlon and left at 6 on return -- Rained good in Carson this PM, & was still raining when I arrived -- Town decorated -- was about some in evening -- Bed at 1, very tired --

Clear & hottest -- 91° -- National Convention at Chicago today -- The young man, A J Stacey, referred to in these clippings, was in Carson a few days ago. I met him at the Arlington. He scraped acquaintance with me, and I found him well behaved gentlemanly, intelligent man, but too fond of drink, as he said himself -- Otherwise I was well impressed -- met

Same -- Sent letter to my daughter, Goodie, Reno -- Harry Day, Sylvester Harrison Day, or plainly SH Day received his commission today from Washington as the new Carson Postmaster and will take charge on the 16th -- next Thursday --
