Same -- 80°-- But there was white frost this morning in various parts of town -- Newlands addressed large audience at Va last evening, & will here tomorrow evening -- Is up for re-election to Congress -- Bed 12 -- cold.

Same -- 78° -- Hon Frank G Newlands came down on the evening train from Va -- Dynamite guns resounded and bonfires blazed along the street in honor of the occasion -- Grand mass meeting at the Opera House -- Sam Davis chairman -- Newlands rendered account of his stewardship in Congress, experience and working of the recent conventions, etc -- Spoke an hour & forty minutes -- Remarks well received as usual -- The Comstock Glee Club quartette enlivened the occasion by some choice songs -- and afterward at the Arlington, sung some more -- festive time -- bed 12:30 -- breezy & cold --

Same -- 76° -- Newlands went to Va on this evening local -- Mailed my 4 page letter to Nicholls, that I wrote on the 26th ultimo -- Dated it Aug 5 -- Bed 12 --

Charley Thompson of Carson, engineer, contractor, brakeman, etc at times on the V & T RR was sent to the State Insane Asylum, Reno, this evening -- Been getting that way for some time -- leaves wife & family here -- Bed 12 --

Bicycle relay race at the race track, this PM, between the Reno and Carson clubs -- 50 miles, for fun and glory -- Five mile relay heats -- whole time, 2 hours & 40 minutes -- Best 5 miles in 13:50. Martin Simas of Reno made best single mile in 2:38 -- Carson won by nearly a mile -- Then followed horse and foot racing, etc -- wrote & sent letter to Bessie, Reno -- Bed 12

Fair and warm -- 89° -- The old Daily Territorial Enterprise, Virginia, came out this morning with Norris & Blake as lessees -- No other change -- Norris has been editor, reporter etc ever since I was on it and Frank Blake, chief printer -- They have a linotype machine now, run by Blake, and only a boy apprentice to assist -- Small force, but very poor paper as compared with what it has been -- General Robt P Keating died this evening at Virginia, of typhoid fever, resulting from his recent political convention experience amid the fearful heat at St Louis -- He came home very sick all the way, and was too far gone to recover -- Remains to be sent to San Francisco accompanied by his family to the residence

of his wife's mother Mrs O'Sullivan -- He was one of my longest known residents of Virginia, Supt of the Hale & Norcross and other mines, a very energetic politician -- good citizen and a leading man among men -- His loss will be severely felt by many -- Native of Ireland about 60 years of age --

Fair and 80° -- Little old Mike Conroy was found dead, on the railroad track, a short distance below the depot early this morning -- lying on his face with both hands in his pockets -- He was about as usual last evening and was walking home to his cabin when he evidently fell forward and died at once -- probably from a sudden attack of heart disease of

which he frequently complained -- He was an old well known resident of Carson about 70 years of age, US army pensioner, native of Ireland, single, etc -- Used to be about Dempseys considerably -- Hon Tom Wren is in town --

Cloudy with several good thunder showers in the PM -- Evening down train delayed at Mound House, waiting for C & C train, which was delayed by a big flood at Eldorado Canyon -- Letter from wife says Bessie leaves Friday morning for Cal and her school duties -- Wrote letter to Bessie, bidding her good bye, etc -- The funeral of Bob Keating took place in SF on Monday I think. Many attended from the Comstock and Carson -- The Carson Appeal of this morning gave the subjoined copied from the S.F. Daily Report.
