Light snow squall about sunset -- moderated & cleared off freezing -- Bed 12:30 --

124 -- State Capital Notes 125 -- 1896 -- Just Before the Battle Big Silver Rally at Opera House Jones Newlands and Stewart

Sunday November 1, 1896

Clear, cool and pleasant -- Letter to wife enclosing one from Bessie -- Senator Stewart came down from Virginia on morning local. Somebody tried to fire the schoolhouse again this evening -- Bed 12:30 --

Monday Nov 2

Same -- Evening a big Silver rally at Opera House -- addressed by Jones, Stewart and Newlands -- Bonfires and music on the streets and everybody hilarious, this being "just before the battle" which comes off at the polls tomorrow -- I attended the meeting & took notes -- The Carson Quartette the Comstock Glee Club and the Indian Band were the chief musical features, the Carson brass band doing the regular outside and orchestral music -- The Opera House was crowded to its utmost limit, and greatest enthusiasm prevailed -- People didn't run very late after the show was over, having in view the political work and electoral battle of tomorrow -- Bed 12 --

Tuesday Nov 3

Clear & pleasant -- Jones went to Gold Hill, Newlands to Reno, and Stewart stayed in Carson -- National general election day -- A quiet but strongly interesting election -- I cast my vote in Carson, and for William McKinley for President of the United States -- Wrote up the big rally of last evening for the Carson News (see next page). Everything passed off smoothly, saloons all closed -- politicians working quietly under the new Purity of Elections law, and everybody on his good behavior -- Evening the telegraphic returns from all parts of the country came in lively and were received and posted at the Arlington, which was crowded with eager Americans -- Senator Stewart was among the most eagerly interested -- Bed at 2 -- at which time the returns strongly indicated a grand Republican triumph in the East, notwithstanding the frequent protestations of contrary minded Senator Stewart -- McKinley our next President

Clear and pleasant -- Election returns pouring in confirming Republican triumph --

Thursday Nov 5

Same -- Went to Gold Hill and back on the train -- saw Jones -- Stewart left for San Francisco this morning, still badly salivated politically -- Jones went to Reno to meet his wife, coming from the East -- Bed 12 --

Friday Nov 6

Same -- Jones and wife came from Reno, and passed up to Gold Hill -- I met them at the train -- The Nevada Stars, BB Club went down tonight to play the Los Angeles BB Club at San F on Sunday next -- Bed at 1 -- freezing --

Saturday Nov 7

Same -- P J Keyes passed to San F this evening -- met him at the train -- He was telegraphed to come down at once, as our case comes up on Monday next -- Letter to wife -- Bed 12

Sunday Nov 8

Cloudy, blustering & threatening -- Letter from wife, inclosing one from Bessie, which I inclosed back to wife by evening mail -- Nevada Stars got badly beaten at SF today by the Tufts-Lyons BB Club of Los Angeles -- 3 to 14 on 9th inning. Another fire at Schultze's hay yard this evening, among hales of hay in barn -- soon put out -- Light rain shower -- Was at dedication of new Presbyterian church by invitation of Rev Nash, pastor --

130 -- Stiff Swift Wind -- Billy Ryan After the schoolhouse Again -- John R White US Grand Jury Indictments --Witherell & Wife Leave

Cloudy, with a fierce west wind all day -- 60 miles an hour -- Wrote a letter to Will T Ryan, Va, for Dempsey -- Bed 12 -- weather moderated -- Showers in early morning --

Tuesday Nov 10

Variable -- Another attempt to burn the schoolhouse was made last night sometime but setting a fire in Fox's barn near by -- burned a hole in the floor and went out -- Sent a letter to John R White, care of E E Rice, WF & Co bank, S.F. Bed 12:30 --

Same -- US Grand Jury in court today reported finding five indictments for selling whisky to Indians -- Reported at 4 PM & were excused for the term -- Sent report in "Capitol Notes" to Journal (see next page) Capt Charley A Witherell and wife left on evening train for their home in San Diego, Cal to Winter -- Address -- 1734 Third st, San Diego Cal --

132 -- Wales Averill, Dropsy -- John R White -- Wife Senator Jones & Wife Leave for Santa Monica Wind Storm -- Schoolhouse Again -- State Capitol Notes Our Reno Property Clear of Debt -- Rain

Same -- warmer -- Met Wales Averill, from Lake Valley, at the Arlington

this AM --- Has come in to be treated for dropsy -- from stomach to knees -- Dr Lee tapped him this evening -- 15 holes -- drew off over two gallons of watery matter -- also very asthmatic

Same -- Received a responsive letter from John R White S.F.

Clear & pleasant -- Senator Jones & wife on train for SF and Santa Monica this evening -- Met & talked with him few minutes -- Evening sent letter to John R White 1122 Pine st S.F. -- also letter to wife -- Bed 1 -- very windy night --

Monday Nov 16

Cloudy and a fearful wind storm all day --Another attempt to burn the schoolhouse by setting fire in Fox's barn, close by, was made last night -- paper and split kindling was used, but the wind blew the fire out -- no coal oil -- PM wrote & sent State Capitol Notes to Journal -- Evening, wind died away & light rain set in which lasted all night -- letter from wife today says got all paid up and full possession and ownership of our home in Reno -- clear of all incumbrance -- Thanks to assistance from eastern relatives --

134 -- Nevada Stars Return Beaten -- JR White Senator Jones -- Averill's Condition Sam Davis Assaulted by Charley Jones
