Variable -- Sent "Capitol Notes" to Journal -- At evening train I met Johnny Trezona, from Va -- going to San Francisco, accompanied by Dick Bennett and Harry Carah -- Johnny badly reduced by consumption and goes below for treatment and to die -- The Salvationists gave another show same as last night -- Street parade and lively exercises -- singing and dancing -- shouting etc in front of the jail -- Some of the prisoners "inside" heard the glorious fun and joined in as best they could, shouting "hallelujah" etc -- They the Army marched to the old Tribune office and gave another 10 cent show for the love of Christ, raising the devil and making war on hell -- Great stories among the public as well as in the newspapers about a mythical air ship being seen in the heavens all over

Clear, cool & pleasant -- Evening the Salvation Army -- About 10 of them -- gave another street parade jubilee, and ten cent jamboree, minstrel show, etc -- Met Patsy Bowler of Hawthorne, and he and I had late lunch of shell oysers, etc -- Bed 12 --

Monday Dec 7

Same -- Congress meets today -- Stewart and Newlands both there already -- Jones at Santa Monica, I guess -- Sent letter to John R White, S.F. Salvation Army gave its concluding jubilee parade and hall concert this evening -- crowded audiences -- Bed 12 -- cold --

Tuesday Dec 8

Clear, cool & pleasant -- PM I rode out to State Prison in a buggy with Patsy Bowler, he having business there -- stayed half an hour -- assessment of 25 cts per share levied on Con Va today & first for some years -- Not one paying mine on the Comstock -- all now run on assessments -- The black portion of the Salvation Army -- including Beck, wife and daughter, and Ed

Lee left this morning for Cal permanently -- half a dozen whites, including 2 women remain here -- Ed Lee stuck on Beck's yaller gal --

146 Dempsey's Aquarium of Trout Killed

Wednesday Dec 9

Same -- letter to P J Keyes, S.F. At 4:30 PM all the trout fish -- eastern brook and rainbow trout and one landlocked salmon -- 8 of them in all -- in Tim Dempsey's aquarium were killed in a few minutes by the water from the town pipes becoming suddenly serated by reason of repairs to the pipes letting in the air -- That salmon trout was the largest -- 16 inches long and weighed about 2 pounds -- 2 eastern book, nearly as heavy and the smallest trout weighed over half a pound -- Gov Sadler & I & Tim were talking together near the tank when we noticed condition of the water was beginning to effect the fish -- Tim dipped them out and placed the in a big tub of water as soon as possible, but they would die -- Been in that tank about 3 years -- Fred Gifford took them home and feasted on them -- fine eating -- luxurious and no ways detrimental --

Same -- State Att'y Gen'l R M Beatty, died at the Arlington about noon, of pneumonia and heart failure -- A native of Illinois, aged 46 years --

Variable & cold -- Genl Beattys brother and son arrived from California -- letter from wife & 1 from J R White

Saturday Dec 12

Stormy -- strong SW wind -- showery & muddy -- Wales Averill died at 2 PM, at Judge Hawthorne's residence to which he had been removed from the Arlington some days ago -- result of his dropsy -- asthma, etc -- Genl Beatty's remains taken from Pythian Hall, to State House at 11 AM -- laid in state till 6 PM, when taken to the train, escorted by K of P, State officers, friends -- Went to S.F. -- Gov Sadler, Supreme Judge Bonnifield, Secy of State Howell and State Prison Warden Henerson went along as guard of honor -- quite a number of friends from the Comstock here & elsewhere also went along --

Fine & clear here, but passengers from Va this evening say that two inches of snow fell there this morning and it was stormy and disagreeable

all day -- Averill was to have been buried today, but no casket large enough could be found short of Sacramento, so one had to be sent for -- He still in the chair where he died, & not to be disturbed till casket arrives -- Met Doctor Franklin of Gardnerville this evening, at Dempsey's, very intelligent and entertaining gentleman -- Bed 12 -- As before remarked the assessment of 25 cts per share levied last Tuesday on Con Va places it among the non-paying mines, which includes all on the Comstock -- Less than a dozen of those mines are now quoted in the stock market, all the others being off the board -- Shows that people are pretty tired of paying assessment -- and the old Comstock is played out worse than ever --

Variable, but pleasant -- The Carson public schoolhouse fire bug is caught at last -- At 5 O'clock this morning, Walter Kermeen was arrested in the act of setting fire to the public schoolhouse, by officer Ulrick, who has been quietly keeping inside watch of the building for several nights -- About 16 yrs old, son of J J Kermeen Supt of the Dunderberg mine, near
