New Year -- Keyes Wants $20 -- 1897 Harmon Kirchner's Death Henry Rosenbrock's Baby

Friday January 1, 1897

Variable -- morning, a few light snowstorms -- Harmon Kirchner's right leg was amputated above the knee at the German Hospital, San Francisco yesterday. I sent him a letter of condolence this morning. Was about town considerably during day and evening, making New Year's calls etc, paid up some bills, etc -- Bed at 1 -- got letter from P J Keyes SF today, wants $20 --

Clear & pleasant -- got my cane feruled and spiked for slippery weather -- Henry Rosenbrock's wife had a nice girl baby this PM -- A telegram received 11 AM at Arlington Hotel from the German Hospital San Francisco said Harmon Kirchner was dying, & would not last long. Evening I was at

train from Virginia I learned that John Piper died in San Francisco at 1:30 PM today -- heart disease and dropsy -- A telegram received at the Arlington said that Harmon Kirchner died at 6 last evening -- About 60 yrs old -- died of blood poisoning and ((clipping covers rest of phrase)) -- Bed 12 --

Cloudy and variable -- Piper was buried at SF today -- His wife and family were present -- Bed 12 --

Tuesday Jan 5

Clear & pleasant -- letter from John R White, SF confirmed the failure of my Keyes mining pool suit of $52,000 -- Case to be appealed -- Jones was in Carson today, but I didn't happen to meet him -- Bed 12 --

Cloudy -- variable -- Sent letter to John R White, 1122 Pine st S.F. Jones is at Empire or Gold Hill -- Great talk in the papers about the new American Flat boom -- Bed 11:30 --

Same -- Met P J Keyes at train this morning -- returning to Va from S.F.

Variable -- light snowsqualls -- Met & had long chat with Chancellor Derby this evening at the Arlington. He is in from his home in the eastern

Jones off for Washington -- Cost $5 Mrs Hartley Pardoned Out -- Justice Suit First Big Snow of the Winter -- Sleighing

part of the State on business for a day or two -- Got my coat from the cleaning and repairer today -- cost $5, Jones left Reno for Washington this morning -- Bed 1 --

vs the Crown Company, Barkley et al, in the US Circuit Court today brought about 40 persons from the Comstock, including surveyors, witnesses, etc -- Will last some days -- Paid Yerington $10 I owed him today -- Bed 1:30 -- snowing lightly --

AM cloudy and variable -- PM cleared off fine -- legislators and official aspirants gathering in lively from all parts of the State -- By morning train I sent letter to Norris & Blake, lessees of Va Enterprise asking to be reporter for coming session -- Afterward called on Yerington at his office asking him to help me in the matter -- then sent a telebram to N & B saying "Consulted Yerington -- was favorable -- told me to write you immediately" -- Sent a letter to J P Jones, Washington D.C. inclosing newspaper clips, informing & posting him up in the situation to date -- Evening about town -- Bed 12 --

Clear & pleasant -- Greatest buzziest day of all, the few delayed arrivals, legislative etc, getting in -- caucus of Assembly of this PM on US Senatorial amounted nothing -- Evening caucuses of both houses made fall program of nominations of attaches etc -- all through before 11 -- At 4 PM sent telegram to Norris & Blake of Enterprise: "Will I proceed to report Legislature for Enterprise. Please answer. "The answer came an hour later "No" -- only this and nothing more. Sent a letter to Jones to date. Bed at 1 -- Mott Riehm of Va, brother in law of Maggie Moore, I met at train this morning on return from Reno where he went last evening to meet Maggie -- found her and gave her my best regards -- etc -- I gave a little item about it to the Carson Weekly for tomorrow morning.

Fine, thawy day -- Reported Senate for the Journal -- Evening caucus of both Houses in the Assembly chamber on US Senator -- First ballot resulted Jones 35, Nixon 3 -- Through at 9, too late for telegraph -- Went to RR depot --
