Monday Feb 1, 1897

Stormy -- Rained most of the day -- Streets very muddy. Much snow fell in the mountains near by -- the old Sierra Nevada -- Reported Senate, as usual -- Evening attended lecture discussion on Woman Suffrage -- Held in Senate Chamber, crowded -- Mrs Williamson, formerly of Austin, made the principal talk -- Summerfield of Reno next against it and Deaton, Skaggs et al all the same -- Bed 12 -- China New Year -- Plenty of fire crackers, etc

Tuesday Feb 2

Variable, moderate, pleasant -- As usual -- Bed 12:30 -- About an inch of snow fell early this morning, but melted off very soon in following warm sunshine -- streets very muddy -- No sleighing thus far here or Reno, but plenty on the Comstock --

Wednesday Feb 3

Very variable -- Several snow squalls -- couple of inches of snow -- melted about as fast as fell -- very sloppy. Letter to wife -- George Millar formerly of Austin in town -- drumming for crockery from San F -- Very drunk -- Bed 11 -- very tired -- Millar been here since Tuesday -- Is on a

After making telegraphic acknowledgement of your dispatch I received your good favor of the 15th, for which I thank you very much. Tomorrow is the day upon which the legislature is to act, and I trust it will ratify the action of the caucus.

Variable, light showers, moderate -- WK Wheelock, partner with Dan Stuart arrived this morning, says Stuart will be here also next Sunday or Monday from Dallas Texas -- left there Tuesday evening -- Then the final arrangements will be made for the Corbett Fitzsimmons fight -- Put George E Millar to his bed at the Arlington about 10 oclock this evening -- still keeping

moderate -- About 9 oclock AM or a little before, fire alarm -- State Printing office -- Gasoline tank of the 4 horse power gasoline engine exploded -- About 12 gallons in it -- flew all over everything in the room & blazed good -- 12 printers in composition room, and 7 women in binding room got out lively -- Only man hurt was Jim Huling, pressman, only one in pressroom -- was working a Gordon press within 15 ft of tank when exploded so he rushed out like a comet with a fiery tail. Succeeded in brushing of the fire, but both hands badly burned. Whole inside of room badly charred -- floor and all -- Damages not less than $1,500 or more -- The Senate and Assembly adjourned their sessions this PM till

Clear and very pleasant -- Edward G Cook connected with Brady manager of Corbett arrived this morning -- From NY two or three days ago -- Has examined the accomodations of Steamboat Springs & come from there this morning, with [illegible] best place for Corbett's training -- will see Walley's Hot Springs, Genoa, also and decide shortly -- WW Naughton, the S.F. Examiner famous special correspondent also arrived this morning to stay till battle is over -- Evening sent letter to wife -- Recd letter

Variable -- PM cloudy & cold -- PM I wrote letter to Jones but didn't get it off -- Met little Abe Meyers formerly of Va this evening -- Used to be a good lightweight fighter 2 or 3 yrs ago & in the ring on sundry occasions -- father a tailor next to Postoffice at Va -- He, as well as other similar sports are getting to Carson -- Bed 12 --

Monday Feb 8

Variable but pleasant -- Evening completed & sent my letter to J P Jones -- 3 pages with clippings -- Met W W Naughton, special reportorial correspondent for the SF Chronicle this evening & had quite a talk -- Bed 2 --

Tuesday Feb 9

Variable -- Dan Stuart did not arrive or [illegible] by the big crowd at the depot -- Got off my letter to J P Jones -- Evening about town -- Bed at 2 -- Telegraphed SF Chronicle this evening for chance to report, & would write tomorrow --

Wednesday Feb 10

Clear and pleasant -- Was introduced to Harry Corbett, Jim's brother on the street this AM. He came yesterday on lookout for business, etc -- left this evening to meet Jim passing Reno from the East for San Francisco -- Reported Legislature as usual -- Evening sent a letter to MH DeYoung of the SF Chronicle asking chance to report for it in the prize fight campaign -- Examiner correspondent -- WW Naughton already here, and other newspaper correspondents & others coming in -- Bed 12 --

Thursday Feb 11

Clear & Springlike till evening when stiff cold breezes & clouds from the SW got in -- Dan Stuart, Wheelock, Brady, and all the others except the fighters themselves, Corbett and Fitzsimmons, arrived on morning train -- Settled at noon conference with Stuart that the fight comes off in Carson -- that settles it -- Bed 12 -- raining lightly -- Sent letter to Sacramento Bee about reporting tonight --
