Big crowd of Workers on the Arena --- 1897 Sleighing gone -- The Fighters -- The Legislature

Monday March 1, 1897

Variable -- few light snowsqualls -- Thawy and very muddy -- sleighing gone -- 120 men working on the arena -- and getting it into shape fast -- More newspaper men, sports and fighters coming in every day -- Both men hard at work training in their respective quarters. Senate started in an hour sooner, 10 AM -- but had to get along without Alex McCone, the President, he being delayed by some trouble on V & T RR. He arrived and presided in the PM session -- Assembly will also get in to work at 10 AM tomorrow, and both will run it through the week on that time, as next Monday will be the last, or 50th day -- Bed at 12 -- Most of the men working on the arena are from the Comstock.

Corbett's Wife and Sister Arrived -- Wife & Bessie Wife Legislators Working -- I weight 193 lbs Evening Sessions both Houses -- Old Bill Davis

Tuesday March 2

Clear & very pleasant -- Corbett's wife and his sister came on train this AM, & he took them out to the Shaw's Springs in carriage -- I saw them -- Senate held AM & PM long sessions and evening from 7 to 10 -- gave me lively work -- letter from wife and Bessie -- Bed 12 --

Miners" -- Rives $10 -- letter to wife, returning Bessie's -- Bed 12 -- Evening session of both houses -- I was in it as usual -- Bed 12 -- Met old Bill Davis at Appeal office -- afterward at Dempsey's -- He is an old prize fighter of note -- used to be at Va on the police. Kept a saloon also -- Killed Billy Ash while policeman -- Had Japanese wife -- Arrived here day or 2 ago and is watchman down at the arena -- I was weighed today -- 193 lbs -- Evening sessions both Houses -- Keeps me busy -- Bed 1 --

Republican administration Inaugurated!!!! More Snow -- Rives $5

Thursday March 4, 1897

Variable and cooler -- Both houses held full sessions, also evening -- Bed 12 -- Inauguration Day -- Telegraph says grand affair -- Over 40,000 people spectators -- Mac is all right and "country's safe" and under our good old Republican administration -- once more --

Friday March 5

Variable, very cloudy & cooler and evening after Senate adjourned at [6:60?] big snowstorm set in -- 3 inches when I went to bed at 12:30 and still looked like more snow --

Saturday March 6

Snowed last night and today to the accumulation of 6 or 7 inches -- Fair sleighing & very slippery -- No night session of either House -- Adjourned till Monday -- Bed 1 -- Judge Rives $5 -

Queer Letter From Wife -- Letter to wife Sam Davis' Press Banquet -- 1897 Howard C Hackett

Sunday March 7

Variable with sunshiny, snowsqually and cold -- Letter from wife, says she was here with her class Friday -- Visited Capitol, schools, prison, Arena and other places -- Was in Senate twice, seated behind me but did not like to call my attention or trouble me, etc, under the circumstances -- wrote her a letter in reply -- By special invitation from Sam Davis I rode out to his Holstein ranch about 2 miles north of town to a press banquet, given by him to representatives of leading papers East and West -- mostly East -- About 30 people at tables, including Davis, wife & 2 daughters, and Miss Bessie Mighels -- Nice collation of usual good things & plenty of white wine and claret -- Howard C Haskett, sporting editor NY World was toast master, etc -- jolly good fellow -- toasts, speeches, sentiments, and jolly fun winding up with some singing -- In response to call I made a brief speech -- Broke up at 2:30 -- Rode out & back with Hal Mighels in 1 horse cart -- Bed at 3 -- cold & inclined to storm.

Fair & pleasant -- Very busy legislature -- each House held evening sessions -- The great arena about completed & fighters in full active training -- all sort of games running all about town & a host of gamblers from all parts of the country -- Bed at 12 -- Got letter from wife --

Wednesday March 10

Variable -- Sunshining and a few flakes of snow occasionally in the air -- Street mud about dusty -- At noon, parade of Makara Minstrel Co -- I was at evening performance -- Very good -- Big house -- Bed 12:30 -- Clear and fine & not freezing hard --

Thursday March 11

Variable -- generally pleasant -- the streets getting dry and dusty -- Snow gone -- Light Legislative work -- Assembly held night session, but not the Senate -- 2 big page letter to wife -- Evening at Makara Minstrel show again --

very good -- Fair house -- Bed 1 -- Clear & pleasant -- freezing some -- Met with Scott Jackson last evening and this evening 6 ft 2 inches of very black nigger from Australia, a leading member of this troupe -- 2nd cousin to Peter Jackson the famous pugilist -- blacker than Peter -- Been in this country for last 12 years --

Matt Callahan -- Legislature Adjourns Sine die Wife & Bessie -- Senatorial Photo Group Eighteenth Session Closed

Friday March 12

Variable, but generally pleasant -- Streets dried and dusty -- snow gone -- Legislature trying to adjourn but don't succeed much -- Evening met old Matt Callahan, the old brick maker -- and we ran the town together and at 12 I took him to bed with me -- Lives over in Washoe valley, on Satena creek -- Lib Hastings lives with him --

Saturday March 13

Clear pleasant & cool -- Letter from wife & Bessie -- Legislature fought to a finish at 12 tonight -- I reported of course -- Bed at 2 -- Legislature adjourned sine die -- At noon recess, Middlemin, Carson took fine picture of Senate and attaches including myself, at north entrance of the State Capitol -- I in it -- 29 in all -- And so ended the Eighteenth Session of the Nevada Legislature --
