Thursday July 1, 1897

Fair and pleasant -- nice breeze -- Wrote & copied and sent 3 page letter to Andrew Nicholls, Los Angeles -- Theodore Figel was arrested in San Fran yesterday afternoon on one charge of murder, two of forgery, and three, felony and embezzlement -- He was previously arrested on three charges of embezzlement and held on $12,000 bonds but no more bonds now. He is in jail -- So says the S.F. Report of today -- Young Will Perkins, who graduated from the Keeley cure here yesterday went to Reno last evening, where his father, Perkins the druggist at Virginia contemplates starting a drug store, putting Will into it, selling out at Virginia and retiring from the business himself -- Bed 11 --

Friday July 2

Same -- Letter from J R White S.F. -- PM wrote a Kinzle letter dated from June 30 -- W J Bryan, the defeated Presidential candidate is on his way from Nebraska to Los Angeles, Cal, where he is to deliver Independence Day oration -- was expected to pass through Reno, arriving at 10 this evening -- Committee from Comstock, Carson, Reno etc selected to welcome him, take

Comstock & Carson $1 for round trip to go to Reno was at once declared off -- abandoned -- But a beautiful silver plate, appropriately engraved, for the Committee to present as tribute from Nevada -- Bryan was taken to Winnemucca yesterday to Judge Bonnifield -- So this Bryan demonstration was otherwise a fizzle -- Immense crowds of Christian Endeavorers are on their way from the East to their grand convention in San Francisco -- Will be 40,000 or more, from all parts of the country -- 2 dozen or so will attend from Carson -- John White in his letter says looks like my Keyes suit is to be quietly dropped, or settled -- amount to nothing -- Bed 11 --

Saturday July 3

Same -- Morning train from Cal over 2 hours late -- letter from Hon Henry Rives, Salt Lake City -- for me to "write immediately" & give statement of account between us -- I did so by return mail -- $20 balance due -- Mint was decorated with flags etc this PM, for the Fourth -- Other decorations preparing about town -- Evening young America popped crackers some-

Sunday July 4

Same -- Sent 2 page letter to wife -- PM & evening plenty of firecrackers, bombs etc -- Bed 11 --

Independence Celebration at Virginia -- 1897 Zimmer left his wife -- Jose Salinas' New Violin

Monday July 5

Clear, fine breezy day -- No celebration in Carson -- considerable decoration, flags, etc -- Train hour late -- 150 or more from Carson got aboard, for Va celebration -- Indians, Chinese, etc -- Curry Engine Co, Gov & staff -- 4 extra cars -- Arrived at Va 12:20 -- city crowded -- Procession forming -- It started about 1, out B st to Divide -- back through C st & by Mill st & B to Opera House -- Dr Stubbs of University Orator -- I didn't attend exercises -- round town -- Met Jose Salinas -- went with him to his house & saw his new fiddle made of his Tahoe wood by himself -- Tried it -- pretty good -- Took him to dinner at [blank] restaurant, C st -- Met Mrs Zimmer on C st & had pleasant chat -- Told me Louis had left her again 3 wks ago -- Failed to provide & shiftless -- PM lots of games, athletic, etc on C st -- very lively & interesting -- The procession was usual style, military, Fire Depts, car of State, Goddess, Miners Unions etc -- I met

lots of old friends -- After midnight tried to find a bed but couldn't -- sat in a chair & slept about an hour -- About 400 in procession -- Va collected $416.75 -- A very good celebration -- better than usual -- Reno

Tuesday July 6

Same -- got to train early morning -- Slept on car all way to Carson -- Arrived there at 10:20 feeling tired & demoralized -- got off on wrong side of train -- got home as soon as I could & to bed, & slept about 5 hours -- Found letter from wife at the P.O. -- Evening about town -- Bed 11 -- Got right hand and right shin bruised somehow in my trampings about Va -- both quite sore -- Didn't get into any fight and don't think I tumbled down anywhere -- Stiff & lame --

Wednesday July 7

Same -- Johnny Carter got pulled for disturbing the peace last evening in front of Salvation Army Barracks -- Kept in jail & in court this PM, suing officer Brule for assault & battery -- got beaten -- Dined with him at Arlington Hotel -- Johnny celebrated too vigorously -- Quite a

little excitement last day or two about a newly discovered gaslight, which is at Evan Williams' place, Empire -- He recently returned from the East with the inventor, where he got it patented -- parties from Carson who have visited it last 2 evenings pronounce it wonderful -- The great tariff bill passed the U S Senate by 10 majority this day -- 38 to 28 -- Goes back to House for ratification or further discussion or action -- Bed 11 --

Thursday July 8

Same -- train 1 1/2 hours late again because of Endeavorers train obstructing -- But nearly all got past today -- Johnny Carter was fined $10 this AM for disturbing the peace evening before last -- Took me to dinner again with him at the Arlington -- Then I took him home & left him to care of his wife -- Bed 11 -- Quite a number more went to Empire to see the new light this evening --

Friday July 9

Same, warmer -- 84° -- The "Wizard Oil Co" playing at Opera House this week to fair houses -- 15 cents -- cheap variety and medicine show -- Bed 11 -- Train 3 hours late -- Big fire in showsheds west of Truckee yesterday PM or last night -- destroyed 3 mules of shed and track -- detained several Endeavorers trains at Reno -- Cold nights, almost frosty last 2 or 3 wks -- Good nights for sleeping --
