Same -- "Reno Day" at Carson Fair -- Not over a couple of dozen went from here -- Bed at 11 --

Thursday Sept 30

Cloudy & cool -- Evening a few very light sprinkles of rain -- Bed 11 -- very dark -- Met W S James at train this morning on way back to Gold HIll from Oregon where has been looking out for gold mine owned by Jones crowd & himself, for the last month or so -- Says its a good one -- Had quite a talk with him about Centennial --

Friday October 1

Variable -- cooler -- Wrote 6 page letter to M Kinzle, Nevada City, Cal and 6 page letter to Andrew Nicholls, Los Angeles Cal -- Both about alike & on Centennial -- Got both off on the west bound train at 11 PM -- Bed --

Saturday Oct 2

Same -- Met John Mackay at morning train on way from SF to the Comstock -- Had quite a little chat with him -- We received a box of plums and a box of grapes from Bessie today -- Forty eighth anniversary of my arrival in SF in 1849 -- Bed 11 --

Sunday Oct 3

Same -- Got long 7 page letter from F J Mette, Philipsburg, Montana where he has gone to settle up the estate of his daughter, widow of George

Clear & pleasant -- The races at Carson are continued for the present week or till they get through -- Comstock Sept payroll $55,807.16 -- $3,000 less than last month and lower than for some time -- Bed 11 --

Tuesday Oct 5

Variable -- light sprinkle or 2 of rain -- On morning east bound train I saw Capt Johnny Pooley who left for Klondike from the Comstock Aug 30 -- He only went as far as Juneau and turned back -- going now to take look at some mines out in Idaho, etc -- John W Mackay went from Va to the Silver Peak mines, Esmeralda Co yesterday -- to examine with idea of purchase -- I am badly troubled with hay fever -- nose & eyes, sneezing, weeping etc -- a bad cough -- got it good now -- Evening light showers -- Bed 11 -- Solly Smith beat George Dixon for featherweight championship at Woodwards Pavilion SF evening before last in 20 rounds --

Same -- cooler -- several light showers -- Letter from Kinzle, Nevada City, Cal. Met Johnny Ludwig this morning at the train bound for Gold Hill --

used to be at Crown Point about the works etc -- now attending Mariposa Grant for Senator Jones interest -- Going to Mason Valley and then back to Mariposa -- Yom Kippur or Day of Atonement, from 6 last evening till 6 PM today -- Most of the Jews here observed it -- Bed 11 -- clear & pleasant -- I put item in Journal this evening on Pooley --

Reno's City Election on Water and Light Kinzle's Letter Inclosed to W S James US Sailor Boys -- Delayed Trains 50 mile Relay Bike Race

Thursday Oct 7

Same -- Citizens election held under the new city incorporation, on question of whether the city shall construct new water and light works or allow the old Co to keep on as heretofore -- Election passed off quietly & resulted in favor of citizens, new water etc by vote of 409 to 130 -- Saloons all closed during election, from 9 to 6 -- 000 -- Bed 11 -- copied Kinzle's letter of yesterday, this evening intending to send the original to W S James, Gold Hill --

Friday Oct 8

Clear & pleasant -- On AM westbound train I saw about 150 sailor boys from the East for the US cruiser Baltimore at San F ordered to Honolulu -- Mostly young fellows & rather a fine looking lot -- Evening wrote & mailed letter to W S James Gold Hill inclosing Kinzle's letter -- Bed 11 --

Saturday Oct 9

Variable -- trains all delayed by a freight train ditched near Boca -- Through at noon -- Bed 12 --

Sunday Oct 10

Clear & very pleasant day -- Big 50 mile relay race between the Sacramento & Reno clubs, at race track -- AM trains brought wheelmen & excursionists from Sac, Carson, the Comstock, etc & many came via Geiger Grade -- 3 coach special from Va, full, $1.50 round trip -- $1 from Carson -- 2,500 people at the race -- Judge W H Young & I walked out (distance a mile) & back & together in grand stand -- Big crowd -- piles of women & children -- Hastings Brass Band did fine music -- Race very interesting & well contested & Sac

50 mile Relay Bike Race -- Sacramento vs Reno Rain -- 1897 -- Sam Jones -- John Mackay -- 1st snow of Season

won by about 1/4 mile -- Began at 1:30 & closed at 4 -- Mishaps to Reno boys gave the Sac boys 3/4 mile ahead at 8th relay & the Renos gained lively in last 2 relays -- Mishaps were Snare's bike gave out in each of 2 first heats coming in on home stretch -- Johnson tripped against his antagonist in 5th relay & was pitched off heavily -- Nash gave out in last heat of 8th relay & had to have a substitute, all losing the time -- but for these mishaps, I think Reno would have won -- Prize was a beautiful silver pitcher -- Evening the Reno boys banqueted the Sacramento boys & sent them home on

Clear & pleasant -- Sam Jones, from Gold Hill and Evan Williams from Empire went down to SF tonight -- Bed 11 --

Tuesday Oct 12

Cloudy & threatening -- Evening light showers -- John Mackay came in from Silver Peak Esmeraldo Co with his companion, young L J Hanchett Jr and went on west bound train at 10:10 for San F -- I met him & shook hands -- Bed 11 -- light steady rain --

Wednesday Oct 13

Light steady rain most of day -- very wet & muddy -- Bed 11 --

Showery -- Mountains all around white with 1st snow of season -- Wrote 4 page letter to J W Mackay, Palace Hotel S.F. inclosing my recent Fred Hart sketch -- mailed it on west bound train at 10:10 PM -- Bed 11 -- Cloudy & cold --
