Variable -- moderate -- Bed 12 -- Sam returned with the rest of the Minstrel Co on a freight train early this morning from Wadsworth -- They had a good house last evening and scored a good success, winding up with a dance --

Same -- PM lively rainstorm set in & occupied this evening -- sent letter to Examiner -- S.F. relative to competition for $100 prize story for Christmas -- Painting kitchen -- Bed 11 -- still stormy -- Am afflicted with a very sore right eye, from a sort of "stye" or festering "black head" beneath the eye and near the nose -- similar to that of nearly 3 years ago in Carson -- Have a big puffed baggy swelling, beneath the eye, disfiguring considerably --

Variable -- muddy -- a few light squalls of rain or hail -- Finished first coat of painting in kitchen -- Bed 12 -- clear & cold. Got letter from Bessie today -- She is to be here at Christmas, she says --

Same -- no storm -- Painted as usual -- Bed 11 -- cloudy & warmer --
Friday Dec 10
Clear & pleasant -- Worked from 8 AM to 10:50 PM on my kitchen painting job -- Biggest days work for years -- A derailing train on the N.C. & O. RR 4 or 5 miles north of Reno this forenoon hurt a couple of the passengers somewhat, but nobody killed, and not extensive, damage done -- Bed 11:30 -- very tired --

Variable -- AM Son Alfred helped me and we finished my big painting job in new kitchen, completing the getting on of the second coat of light olive green, by noon -- PM I was busy painting window casings & trimming doors, mouldings etc bright red -- room 14 x 14 square -- 9 ft 3 inch ceiling -- Pyne the carpenter got new sink into place & connected with sewer yesterday -- He has about finished his part of the job -- Evening

I was down town awhile -- The gas and incandescent light works out of fix -- everybody burning coal oil & candles -- dark -- no use for reading rooms -- Only 4 arc electric street lights and the moon to light the town -- my sore right eye, sorer than ever -- blackhead swelling increased & extending -- Bed 11 -- Orion Clemens, elder brother of Mark Twain, and Territorial Secretary & Treasurer of Nevada died at his home in Keokuk, Iowa, this morning of old age, heart failure, etc --
Sunday Dec 12
Same -- AM down town -- PM painting door & window casings, moldings trimmings etc of the kitchen a brilliant blood red, contrasting beautifully with the light olive of the general painting -- Sam pretty sick at home today & yesterday from a bad cold, biliousness etc -- Evening down town -- electric lights all right again so I read up the papers, etc -- Wrote and mailed a short letter to Bessie -- Bed 11 -- Mother of President McKinley died at Canton, Ohio, yesterday morning, at 2:30 -- Nearly 90 years old --
New Kitchen Completed -- Snow -- 1897 Very Hard Days Work -- Moved into New Kitchen Durrant to be hanged Jan 7th -- Sam 22 yrs old Bad Painful Night --

Variable & threatening -- I finished painting the new kitchen, painted an old cupboard, built some shelving in cellar stairway etc -- Didn't go down town at all -- Payne has also got through and taken tools home today --

Variable -- light snowstorm most of day -- an inch or so of snow -- I painted a cupboard and put in lot of shelves in cellar stairway -- Worked till 11 PM -- Bed 12 --
Wednesday Dec 15
Variable -- light snow squalls -- Sam 22 yrs old today -- Did hard days work, taking up & putting down linoleum carpet in kitchen -- some carpenter work etc -- got stove and most everything moved into new kitchen and fixed up for supper -- Durrant was sentenced at 10 AM today in S.F. for the fourth time, to be hanged on Jan 7th next -- Bed 10:30 -- completely used up & so lame I could hardly walk. Had a severe chill on first going to bed and turned and rolled about all night groaning with severe pains in my back, legs and every bone in my body -- worst I ever had -- And the Salvation Army seemed with me tormenting me --

Same -- Sat by hot fire most of day, unable to work -- Have a very bad cold, contracted yesterday in my stove moving work, etc -- PM I had to go to bed for 2 hours good sleep -- got none last night -- was groaning and talking all night, in fact quite delirious at times -- Bed 11 --
